Pontiac GTO |
The big news for 1964 was the introduction of the Pontiac GTO. Considered by many as the first true muscle car, Pontiac saw the potential for dropping a big block engine into an intermediate sized car and marketing it at a budget price. Pontiac had to sneak past GM restriction and began by making the GTO an option on the Tempest or Lemans, thus creating the hottest performance machine yet. The GTO sold in great numbers and is credited for fueling the competition of the muscle car market between GM, Ford, and Chrysler. Total sales of the Pontiac GTO from 1964 to 1974, was 514,797.
