1978 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe
Have you tracked second generation F-Bodies lately? They're skyrocketing in value and finally receiving the respect they deserve in the collector car circle! Naturally, Trans Am's and Firebirds were saved at a pretty good rate thanks to Burt Reynolds but finding a clean Camaro in mint shape and with some awesome upgrades for performance sometimes is difficult. Without the benefit of movie stardom, the sole source of clean F Body Camaros is dedicated owners who carefully restored a few lucky cars. Those spotless survivors are now leading a charge up the value charts and re-exposing enthusiasts to a segment of the performance car market that once seemed forgotten.
This street legal, pro street looker, custom painted and engine changed Camaro is a real head turner. Whether it's the noise it produces for your ears or your eyes, it is almost like you cannot look away.
Very straight steel panels were painstakingly restored and present themselves with wonderfully consistent gaps. A coating of Kandy Tangelo Orange with Pearl drapes this car and presents with a beautiful mirror like finish. White decal stripes race up the centerline of the north facing surfaces of this machine and embolden it even more (if that's possible!) The grille has been modified to give the menacing front view a cleaner look and is made up of simple horizontal chromed bars with any badging shaved. Extra wide treaded racing tires with gleaming inner wheels are bolted on back, and American Racing front wheels are wrapped with small Hoosiers up front.
A totally custom canvas pattern tweed covers the buckets, and dash as well as the center console, and gives the roll barred interior a nice tactile feel. A custom dash with a horizontal wood pattern houses a line of Autometer Phantom white-faced gauges. A sport steering wheel had been added and fronts the dash. Also, Simpson racing harnesses are on the buckets. The rear seat has been replaced with a box of woofers and tweeters so you can crank the amps on the Pioneer stereo to drown out the engine noise. A Hurst shifter sits proudly within the field of tweet covering the console. Clean light gray carpet floods the floor. A note, the trunk has been re lined, is pristine, and shows a fuel cell and battery box within it.
Rebuilt in 2011, a 406ci small block shines on like a crazy diamond with all the polished aluminum and chromed surfaces, including a 4-barrel carburetor. Consigner states it has a mere 3,000 miles since the rebuild. Attached to the rear of the mill is a TH350 automatic transmission. Seeing this engine in its Kandy colored engine bay is simply dazzling and shows an amazing rebuild job.
With clean floorpans attached to a straight and true frame, the modifications continue. Items such as a 4" aluminum driveshaft, A Ford 9" rear with a Marc Williams 35 spline axle, and a 4.11 posi-trac rear. Front power disc brakes, and power rear drum brakes are seen, as is a large pipe free flow dual exhaust. Rear shocks have been moved inboard, and big wheel tubs have been fabricated.
Definitely achieving what it sets out to do, (that being GO and SHOW) this car gleams from every aspect. From is beautiful exterior pearlescent paint, to its gleaming engine bay, to the simplified tactile interior in the canvas tweed, this is truly a custom-built Camaro that can be driven to the grocery store!
