1977 Chevrolet G30 Van
NO TITLE-SOLD ON A BILL OF SALE ONLY
Van means a type of vehicle whose name arose as a contraction of the word caravan. The earliest records of a van as a vehicle in English are in the mid 19th century meaning a covered wagon for transporting goods; the earliest reported record of such was in 1829. Caravan with the same meaning has records since the 1670s. A caravan, meaning one wagon, had arisen as an extension or corruption of caravan meaning a convoy of multiple wagons. The word van has slightly different, but overlapping, meanings in different forms of English. While the word always now applies to boxy cargo vans, other applications are found to a greater or lesser extent in the different English-speaking countries.
For consignment, a 1977 Chevrolet G30 1 ton van. This model has a 125-inch wheelbase, and passenger seats have been removed to now fit some shelves. All open glass all around, and metal body which will need some TLC.
Steel panels are bathed in Hawaiian Blue paint which has aged and shows patina. Body panels also show extensive invasive rust on the lower portions of this van around wheel wells, and on rockers. Surface rust is also on this truck on various surfaces, window surrounds, grille, bumpers and hood. A large side door which slides, allows easy access to the cargo area. In the back, dual doors open up for even more access from the back. 15-inch steel wheels which also have plenty of surface rust are on with only 1 wheel cover remaining.
2 plaid cloth insert low back buckets are in front, and these have smooth blue vinyl bolsters. They present very dirty and have several tears and rips. The original dash is still there, and it has wood appliqu. In back, an open cargo area now has some metal post shelving installed from floor to ceiling. Noted, the bed of the cargo area has extensive surface rust and in one corner invasive rust taking over. Door panels are all original and painted in blue.
Within the passenger compartment is a 350ci V8. It is topped with a 4-barrel carburetor and has a TH400 3-speed automatic on the back. For the 1-ton version you get a 14 bolt 3.73 geared rear axle.
Underneath the extensive surface rust continues and is on all surfaces. Rockers have begun to rust through on either side while the floor pans and frame are still structurally sound. Independent coil springs are for the front suspension, and leaf springs for the rear. Power disc brakes for the front, and power drums for the back.
While this van does start, run and drive our test drive was cut short due to a sticking throttle cable and an extremely soft brake pedal.
An extensive project for the ambitious restorer, or just use as is but it will need some wrenching to get it up and running.
