For a nameplate that just passed its 55th birthday, interest in first-generation Mustangs is not slowing down. This example is a 1964 F-code Mustang Coupe finished in desirable Rangoon Red and has been fully restored recently and features a new interior by the previous owner of 17 years!
Made in Fords Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant (VIN code F), this pony is dressed in a ravishing Rangoon Red finish. The paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The ponys bodywork is straight, as youd expect from a fully restored car and the chrome bumpers and trim look great. The engine bay is extremely tidy, the battery looks good, the cargo area is tidy and the full-size spare tire has a matching cover. The undercarriage is tidy and detailed.
The car rolls on Goodyear Allegra radials, size 195/75R14 at all four corners. Each one is mounted to a Ford rally wheels. The wheels are in excellent shape while the tires are in good, original order.
Under the hood is a rebuilt mildly modified 289 CID Windsor V-8 engine breathing through dual exhausts and backed by a four-speed manual transmission.
Inside, youll be seeing red all over as this Mustang has a new interior. The front buckets and rear bench, the matching carpet and headliner all look fantastic. The three-spoke steering wheel evokes memories of summer cruising for ice cream or heading to the beach or lake but the horn is inoperable. The red instrument panel and inner door liners echo the condition of the rest of the interior. Below the dashboard is a set of ancillary gauges fuel, coolant temperature, ammeter and oil pressure. A Hurst shifter proudly sprouts from between the transmission tunnel and completing the interior is a factory AM radio.
Several changes to the Mustang occurred at the start of the normal 1965 model year in August 1964, about four months after its introduction. These cars are known as late 65s. Interior door handles on earlier cars were secured by C-clips; 65 and later models used Allen screws. The spacing in the lower bodyside nameplates were altered, giving them a five-inch length, 1 -inches longer than before. The pushdown lock buttons on the inner doors were chrome-plated on 65 and later models in contrast to the body-colored ones on the 64s.
The engine lineup was changed, with a 200 CID T-code engine. Production of the Fairlane's F-code 260 CID V-8 engine ceased when the 1964 model year ended. It was replaced with a new C-code 289 CID V-8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor as the base motor. An A-code four-barrel carbureted V-8 was next in line, followed by the unchanged 289 HiPo "K-code" equipped with a four-barrel Autolite 4100 carburetor. The DC electrical generator was replaced by a new AC alternator on all Fords (a way to distinguish a 1964 Mustang from a 1965 is to see if the idiot light on the dash reads GEN or ALT).
Competition to this Mustang in 1965 included Chevrolets Chevy II and Corvair, Fords own Falcon Sprint and Plymouths Barracuda.
