Chevy's all-new Nova hit the streets in 1968 and despite its mission as a modestly-sized, affordable car, the engineers at GM made sure that big horsepower would fit comfortably under the hood. To that point, cars like this 1970 Chevrolet Nova SS Tribute make for some very impressive street machines, with this one offering a menacing 383 Stroker V8 under the hood, a smooth-shifting 700R4 automatic transmission managing the gears, and a host of choice options like A/C and power 4-wheel disc brakes that put it over the top. All that performance in a lightweight 2-door body makes performance very entertaining (to say the least), and with a slick black-on-black presentation, this sinister Chevy II is ready to dominate for years to come.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's have a look at this handsome black coupe. The finish is very recent and is in excellent shape, with a miles-deep luster and smooth feel that only high-end black paint can deliver. And when you paint a car black, the bodywork underneath needs to be done right, and the professionals that put this beauty together made sure the panels lined up evenly, the gaps were precise, and the sheetmetal was laser straight. It's not a perfect show pony, but it's pretty darn close as a top-end driver quality muscle car, and the only imperfection we could really find was a minor blemish on the decklid. A GM SS-style hood with chrome inserts, SS badges fore and aft, and a bright red pinstripe that runs end-to-end all give this Nova that street swagger that practically defines the era. They wisely skipped any kind of gaudy stripes or decorative add-ons, so this one is stealthy and mostly stays under the radar, until it's too late. The whole car fits together really well with doors that close easily, a hood that fits flush, and a perfectly crouched stance over fat rubber that accentuates the Nova's semi-fastback profile. Always a favorite of Chevy fans, the blacked-out horizontal grille is a very attractive design that seems to wrap around the headlights, and the chrome that surrounds it really makes the front end pop. The SS-style tail panel mirrors the look of the front end, and with bright chrome bumpers, polished stainless around the glass, and 383 fender badges at the flanks, this Nova sure means business.
The freshly restored interior was certainly built for combat, but they didn't forgo style and comfort in their approach. High-back bucket seats were covered in gorgeous black leather hides, split by a custom center console that stretches all the way to the back seat. That custom center console is the star of the show and the car's command center, wrapped in black leather and punctuated with red stitching and red accents around the cup holders, and it also houses switches for the power windows, a JVC multi-media head unit, and a B&M shifter that manages the 700R4 automatic transmission below. The red-and-black color scheme continues on the slick door panels at the flanks, and the back seat area was transformed with fresh leather seats split by the same custom center console. The black dash is in great shape, wrapped in a super-clean dash pad that's barely seen any sunshine, and the original gauge bezel was fitted with new Dakota Digital gauges that keep a very close eye on the beast under the hood. A leather-rimmed chrome steering wheel was fitted atop a tilt column, a new Vintage Air A/C system keeps the cabin nice and cool, and there's even a retro-style AM/FM/AUX stereo in the stock location in the dash that complements the aforementioned JVC head unit. Fresh black carpets line the floors, a taut and perforated headliner was installed above, while out back the trunk was finished to show and features a couple of Kicker subwoofers that beef up the sound system.
Fast is definitely the name of the game with the powerful Summit Racing 383 V8 under the hood. Not only does it snarl and bark like a race piece, but it looks fantastic inside the highly detailed engine bay. The inner fenders look brand new, the firewall was smoothed and painted to look as slick as the rest of the car, and the block itself is a thing of beauty covered in chromed and polished accessories and topped with a Chevrolet Orange air cleaner and matching valve covers. A big Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor atop an Edelbrock aluminum intake feed the beast, an HEI ignition and chromed alternator spark it instantly, and a set of ceramic-coated, long-tube headers at the flanks help it breathe easy. All the accessories are run through a polished billet front-runner kit and serpentine belt system at the head of the block, while an aluminum radiator keeps the whole show nice and cool. The undercarriage and chassis was finished to a very high standard as well, fortified with tubular A-arms and a big sway bar up front, gas shocks and heavy-duty springs out back, and the soundtrack is downright explosive thanks to a set of
