1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Instead of mixing the thoroughbred Cobra V8 among lesser engines at the Romeo, Michigan, manufacturing plant, Ford has chosen to assemble the DOHC power plant off-line using a dozen two-member teams. Each team will build one engine start to finish and sign off their creation before sending it on its way. This personalized touch also happens to be a longstanding tradition at Aston Martin, the most exotic nameplate owned by the Ford Motor Company. Now, with true craftsmanship and 305 horsepower snorting under the muscle-Mustang's hood, America's original pony car enjoys world-class bragging rights.
For consignment, our consigner tells the story, (and not a lie story, but a story, so pay attention!), of this car #11 which was a pre-production test vehicle that somehow escaped the scrapyard. We know it was used for engine dyno testing, and then shipped to Atlanta for an ad photo shoot. Here the water becomes muddied but if we see it was auctioned off at a southeastern district site around the time of the photo shoot, and where it was dyno'd the plot thickens! I'll go with #11.
Starting out life from the factory as Crystal White, and it's aplenty on this car and save for the badging, there is not one lick of chrome anywhere. Some slight faults are in the paint throughout, but it remains in overall good condition for a respray. A rear spoiler is seen, and correct SVT and Cobra Badges have been adhered to the bodywork. Window trimmings are all in black. The trio of tail lighting is still being used harkening back to the days of yore in the mid 1960's. 17-inch Cobra R wheels nicely polished are on all 4 corners.
Sweet high back bucket seats in tweed brown/tan broadcloth with plenty of body hugging side panels keep you snugly in the seats when you are doing doughnuts in the parking lot. The iconic Mustang twin eyebrow dash in deep black and owning a peppering of white-faced gauges inserted within creates a stealthy look for the interior. There is a band of dark tan vinyl hugging the bottom of the dash, and the other side for the glovebox is also dark tan. A rear 2 plus 2 bench is in and can be folded down for extra access to trunk storage. Ford racing gauges are aerodynamically embedded into the A pillar so you can keep a close watch on the essentials. Embroidered in black Cobra tan floor mats cover nicely preserved tan carpet. All forms like the door panels and center console all make heavy use of the french curve.
SVT Mustang Cobras are for the first time equipped with Ford's 4.6-liter modular V8 engine. The Cobra's 4.6-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC) aluminum V8 produces 305 horsepower. However, with an added Vortech V2 Supercharger Kit, that will boost it up a bit. It has EFI and strapped to the rear of this mill is a Tremec T45 5-speed manual transmission. On the back the rear axle is a Ford 8.8-inch 3.27 Trac Loc.
Some surface rust is noted in the exhaust piping but otherwise very little additional surface rust. Nice clean straight floor pans, independent coil spring suspension for the front, and a 4 link with coil springs for the back. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners and Flowmaster mufflers give this car its growl.
She was a bit feisty for the start up, possibly due to an issue with the fan sensor?? Once we got her going though, performed beautifully on the test track. Neck snapping acceleration and bias free braking to bring you back to earth. Rail like handling and all but the A/C blowing warm, worked swimmingly.
A bit of early SVT history if you will, and original with the look of menacing SVT Cobra in its earliest form.
