The Land Cruiser by Toyota, it’s a thing of beauty. The stance, the thoughtful rugged build and very, very off-road ready... this Cruiser is no Bro-Dozer, but a capable and practical rig apt for the street, yearning for the trail.
Toyota “borrowed” the format from Jeep, and you cannot blame them. Then they “appropriated” the “Land” from the British, still, really, no blame. But now Toyota arguably builds the finest off-road vehicles and you CAN blame them, for the bar of quality has been set high. Here we have taken the best off-roader and applied creative, time-tested modifications to build something stunning and capable. If getting to your remote destination is your goal, take the best, the very best when you do. Our Land Cruiser resides in the town of East Northport, NY and goes where it wants with a clean and clear title in its owner’s name.
Light gray exterior is the first of many modifications focused on the practical. Light pinstriping makes known the fact that this truck has been used for its intended purpose. Used but not abused, there are of course some blemishes in the paint and one tiny spot of bubbles that should be attended to soon. Exoskeleton tubing protects the rear quarter panels while rock sliders take care of the rocker panels. Front bumper is fabricated to maximize approach angle while traversing obstacles yet provide protection and secure mounting for the Warn M12k electric winch. Window and glass all are reported as good. Electric items have been enhanced and operate as designed. The 38” Super Swampers finishing the stance are big yet street-able, purpose driven and competent.
Gray vinyl and cloth are stock and original. Added is a Tuffy center console, holding 2m HAM and CB radios. All gauges are reported to function proper. All climate controls are operating as design and window and door function are noted as performing admirably. It’s a bit worn, the interior, but this truck is a build whose intent is function over form.
Powered by Toyota’s venerable 3.9 litre over-head valved inline 6 cyl, a powerplant designed for dependability and just enough power to perform its task. Take that as a start and add the new and improved Sniper fuel injection system by Holley and perfection proceeds. Motor is reported to have been de-smogged. Next improvement is the addition of a factory Toyota H55f 5 speed manual transmission. But don’t stop there, for behind that trans is a wheeler’s dream: twin married transfer cases. First is the Toyota stock case, next then kissed is a legendary Marlin Toybox, thus giving the option of a “stupid-low” final gear ratio of 235:1. Making all of this work a complete rebuild of the suspension components including all brakes, seals, joints and bushings. Regular maintenance always performed with OEM Toyota fluids, grease, hoses, belts and filter where available.
The thorough and exhaustive review was performed by Lemon Squad. And they had a lot to see. In a nutshell, cosmetically they discovered that one rust potential, poked prodded and perused inside and out, declaring this, wait for it, to be a used truck. Moving to the mechanicals, all said, it was discovered, again wait for it, to be darn near perfect! Just what one might want in a trail ready and well-traveled old soul.
Built for purpose, as our Owner indeed started with a solid platform, the outcome is clear. Our totally built and modified ‘roader is ready, willing and able. A new owner will have a lot to learn, for there is so much this vehicle has to offer. Ready, hit the ignition and class begins.
