GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omolgato. You've probably heard of it. A Pontiac in a saber-toothed tiger skin.
The deceptively beautiful body comes in convertible, sports coupe, and hardtop configurations. With pinstriping.
On a heavy-duty suspension system that thinks it's married to the ground. Bucket seats and carpeting. Wood-grained dash.
Redlines or whitewalls at no extra cost. Chromed 335-hp 4-barrel under the hood. Fully-synchronized 3-speed on the column. Or order a heavy-duty all-synchro 3-speed or 4speed with Hurst floor shifter. Or 2-speed auto. Or the 360-hp 3 2-BBL. There's a catalog full of options. See if you can get your Pontiac dealer to cough one up. That's the GTO / 2+2 performance catalog. You'll recognize it. It vibrates. |

Well it was finally official, GTO had become its own model for Pontiac in 1966 and sales of the new GTO Model sky-rocketed. The new GTO saw many different features including Grill placed parking lamps, GTO nameplates, standard single centered hood scoop, V-shaped front wheel opening badges and a special 389 cubic inch four barrel V-8 with Dual Exhaust and high performance shock absorbers and front stabilizer bars.
Engine and power train remained the same for model year 1965 with a standard GTO being equipped with the 335 horsepower 389 4 barrel. The optional high-performance 389 could be ordered rated at 360 horsepower at 5200rpm. Surprisingly the Tri-power option was dropped for model year 1966. |
