At first glance, your instinct might be to call this a hot rod. After all, it has a 302 Ford V8 under the pointed hood, right (and kudos to the builder for putting a Ford in this Ford). But look closer-the suspension is 1940 Ford, the brakes are vintage, and the overall look is restoration, not modification. Yes, the new V8 disqualifies it from being authentic, but the original character of the car is certainly very much in evidence here.
Henry Ford was funny about black, and everyone is familiar with his now-famous quote, and it just never goes out of style, especially on the sleek two-door sedan with its fastback profile. The paint has a soft glow that looks period-perfect, and the Ford Deluxe trim remains one of the most popular looks of all time. The sheetmetal is also all original, with no fiberglass reproductions used anywhere. It fits together nicely, with the doors closing precisely and with a sound you wont hear on modern machinery. All the original chrome and stainless trim remains intact, too, including bumpers, the front grille, and the trim that runs from nose to tail, all of which is in good condition.
You could call the interior restored instead of rodded, because the original front and rear seats remain, and have been recovered in period-appropriate fabric with a pattern in it that looks very 1940s. The original woodgrained garnish moldings remain fitted to the doors, which feature matching fabric and original knobs and handles. Carpets are a slightly darker color, covered in what appears to be a correct front mat thats in excellent condition. The original gauge cluster has been tastefully upgraded with modern VDO gauges that look completely authentic, and if I hadnt told you about them, you might not immediately notice. Theres also a modern steering column with a shifter for the C4 automatic underneath, although the original wheel has been retained and restored. The radio was originally mounted up high in the center of the dash, and thats exactly where the replacement AM/FM/cassette unit remains today, nicely installed so it doesnt detract for the authentic-looking surroundings.
Power comes from a carbureted 302 cubic inch V8 dressed in Ford Blue. Probably not intended to generate huge acceleration, the updated V8 burbles happily as the car cruises with modern traffic without worries about overheating or vapor lock, both common ailments of the original 85-horsepower flathead. Its a tidy installation designed primarily for function, and as a result, its easy to service and maintain. A C4 3-speed automatic drives an 8-inch rear axle, but the remainder of the suspension and brakes are vintage 1940 for an authentic driving experience. It wears 15-inch radials on steel wheels, but I think Id fit a set of skinny white white bias-plys for an authentic look.
This is a 1940 Ford without any compromises. Its simple, rugged, and dependable, just as Henry wanted, but with upgrades that come from 70 years of motoring progress. Call today!
