 Vehicle Description
Take a look at this extremely rare 1925 Star Coupster. A Coupster is the combination of a coupe and a roadster. The Star was built by Durant Motors. Billy Durant founded General Motors in 1908. He left GM in 1921 after losing the company twice. He was hoping to build another multicar empire when he started Durant Motors where he added the low cost Star. It is not a model T or a Model A although it does resemble a Ford. Durant got a patent on the frame for the Star built by The Haynes Company strictly for the Coupster. The Star is a very well built car and with the frame on the Coupster you can remove the front passenger wheel and drive the car on three wheels. The old Star trucks were the milk and/or ice trucks in the early days. Star cars were built in several different locations. The letter in the model number will tell you the location. Since there were so few of the Coupsters made and even fewer left it is hard to find out much about them. This car has been owned by the same couple for over 50 years. There is a Star Car Club and Star Auto Registry on the internet also. As far as the owners know, this is one of 4 Coupsters made, and the only one left in existance. This Star has a couple of rare options including a "fat mans steering wheel", which means that it will fold to the right to allow you to get in the car and then fold back for driving.
The wood wheel spokes are made of Hickory. Hickory being so hard that these cannot be sanded they must be scraped with glass and then refinished. This car has no windows it has side curtains that slide in a channel and disappear up in the top of the car. The Coupster has a Continental engine and is an assembled car so parts are available. The Coupster featured a full fabric, fixed top but used roadster doors. This top is not the original but has been on the car for about 30 years. The color of this car also is not original. It has a trunk and not a rumble seat. Anything done to this car would have been done 30 years ago nothing has been done since then. The Coupster lasted two years then died, and to our knowledge, no one has ever copied it.
This car was driven in the Antique Auto Tours done by WIBC television for 17 years, This is the entire length of time the tour took place. The tour went from Indianapolis to Southern Indiana and ended up back at the Indianapolis 500 race track just before the Indy 500 race. This was an invitation event only and there was never another Star on this tour. Please, call 800-231-3616 for additonal details on this extremely rare car.
