With Oldsmobile fans and performance seekers eager Oldsmobile got serious with the 4-4-2 option package in 1965 and made it optional on all two door F-85s and Cutlass models, thus eliminating the 4-door models. Power was boosted with the replacement of a new 345 hp 400 engine. The 4-4-2 name now signified the 400 cid engine, 4 barrel carburetor, and “2” or dual exhausts. The package also included heavy-duty shock absorbers, springs, clutch, battery, front and rear stabilizer bars, wider tires, and 4-4-2 badges. With a second year run and much more marketing, sales soared to 25,003 produced. Critics pronounced the 4-4-2 as one of the best yet handling of the intermediate muscle cars and an all around balanced performer.
