DESCRIPTION
1987 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28
A concept created partially by Roger Penske, the International Race Of Champions our IROC would pit all star drivers from numerous venues of racing, against each other in similarly prepared cars. Except for the first season, those cars were provided by Chevrolet, and they chose to feature the Camaro.
This IROC version of the 1987 Camaro is in full IROC street garb. Special painted badging, a low slung windshield, some fairings, a convertible version, and a powerful 5.0 liter throttle body fuel injection engine were just a few of the features that were added to this 1 of 744 version of the Camaro which is currently owned by a collector who only takes it to shows.
Exterior
A red respray covers the straight steel body panels, fairings and front built in spoiler of the car. IROC Z in white fade is seen on each door, as well as Z28 tuned port injection in silver badge on the front lower fender. Black V style hood lovers are in the center of the hood. A black canvas convertible top is on and presents as like new. A lower thin black and white trimming races completely around the car and breaks up the red paint. On front dual rectangular headlights are inset and an upper hood appears to make the car growl at you. On the back the iconic wrap around Camaro taillights are looking good. 16-inch restored silver polished 5 spoke Camaro rims are attached to all 4 corners, and noted as "front" and "rear" wheels because of different offsets. This was the only year with the CHMSL mounted onto the rear spoiler.
Interior
A snazzy deep black broadcloth bowls you over in bucket seat configuration shows angled tuck and roll stitching in the middle panels on seat and back. Bolsters are smooth and all bordered with gray piping. This also holds true for the rear 2 plus 2 seats which individually fold down for rear compartment access. A black console and dash, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, radio and automatic shift lever. Power windows are installed. Power locks, power steering, power brakes, and power toggle mirrors are working and are great conveniences with this sports car. A plastic hard tonneau covering in black hides the top very nicely. A shout out to the door panels which have a square and rectangle space age design using black vinyl, carpeting and molded plastic with some wood appliqu peppering the toggle and actuator panel.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in a nice clean original engine bay is a 305ci V8. It has electronic fuel injection atop which gives plenty of smooth power. On back a 4-speed automatic (700R4) transmission. All this attached to a 10-bolt 2.73 Gear rear axle.
Undercarriage
Some heavy surface rust is noted on the suspension and driveshaft and rear pumpkin. Floorpans show some invasive rust with some having been remediated, some not. The frame rail holding the rear roll pan and bumper is showing invasive rust. Power front brakes and power rear drums are on, as well as independent coil sprung front suspension, and torque arm with coil springs for the back.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and smooth idle until the warmup was afforded to me. I slipped into the black broadcloth interior and was grabbed by the seats. A shift into "D" and I was off like a prom dress, with great acceleration, smooth automatic shifting, and good handling on the test track. She's able to cruise at highway speeds easily, and air was blowing cold. I had the convertible down for my test and it was a pleasant experience with plenty of airflow from the outside and the cold A/C blowing. The top worked smoothly and is manually operated.
Except for the badging, this car is disguised as a mild mannered everyday 1987 Chevrolet Camaro. A look under the hood, as well as the IROC status option package B4Z, makes it anything but mild mannered. All in very good condition, this car is a definite goer, but can also be viewed at any car show you may want to drive it to. Go ahead, get in and turn it over...well the engine, keep the wheels down on the ground, although they have a tendency to spin when you get goosey with your boot!
