In 1969 the Ford 428 Cobra Jet was built with three versions, the first option being a non-Ram Air version, then followed by the Ram-Air version with a functional shaker hood scoop and topping the list was the new Super Cobra Jet which came with the Drag Pack option. The Super Cobra Jet also included the shaker hood scoop, and a modified crankshaft and stronger connecting rods, a limited-slip 3.91:1 or 4.30:1 rear axles, an external oil cooler, and no air conditioning. All three engines were under-rated at 335 horse power.
In 1970 Ford replaced the 428 Cobra Jet engines with the new 429 Cobra Jet engines. The 429 Cobra Jet was rated at 370 horse power while the Super Cobra Jet had 11.3:1 compression and was rated at 375 horse power.

Popular Science Magazine rated the 1969 Mustang as a first choice for those that wanted racy looks and yet wanted to keep the cost down rather than setting records for the quarter mile. Get the smallest V-8, a light and r.p.m.-happy 302 cubic-inch job, Cruise-O-Matic, and a 2.79:1 axle ratio. Heavy Duty Suspension improved the handling precision. |
