This car is in very good condition. Nearly 100% of the exterior has been restored (small dents straightened, some chrome replaced, and professionally painted the original rare color. The car has brand new Michelin tires, and is completely rust-free. Having spent its life in Arizona it has never had any rust. Not smoked in. The original owners manual, chassis catalog and some repair records are included.
Mechanically it is in good shape. The 4.5 liter, 230 hp. V-8 engine is very strong - accelerates quickly, and the automatic transmission shifts well. Mercedes, as usual, was well ahead of its time, with fuel injection and disc brakes all around (they're in good condition), power windows, fully independent suspension, etc. It also has shoulder harness seat belts from the factory. Recently replaced power steering pump and fresh oils throughout.
For a complete restoration the interior will need some attention. The MBtex seat covers are in good shape though the rear seat is a bit 'tired' (see photo). A huge plus is that the extensive interior wood is in excellent condition, some having been replaced (All new wood for this model runs close to $1,000.). The head liner is in good condition. Carpeting should eventually be upgraded. The ac is not hooked up at present. It has the original working Becker radio (2 knobs are missing however). The speedometer works but the odometer stopped about 2,000 miles ago (it shows 24,015) giving an original total of about 126,000 miles.
This model was actually produced for only one year (1972) but sold as either a '72 or 73. A well known auto reviewer has stated:"The 280SE has been acknowledged as one of the finest automobiles of its time, and one of Mercedes most enduring classic sedans. Its timeless balance, style and efficient design becomes more appreciated through the years as the milestone car it was. The mix of superb handling, smooth, stable ride, and impressive power make this car a joy to drive. 1972 marked the end of the hand built era for Mercedes-Benz and the doors on this car close like a bank vault. Mercedes coachwork of this era rival the quality of fit and finish of Rolls Royce"
This car turns a lot of heads and oozes undeniable Mercedes class. We are selling only in order to finance college for our daughter.
