1964 Pontiac Bonneville

The 1964 Pontiac Bonneville received a minor facelift from the previous year, gone were large side body moldings, giving it a much cleaner side profile. The grill was also restyled and appeared deeper set using three large horizontal bars. The Bonneville badges were brought back from the earlier 1962 Pontiac Bonneville versions and were added to the front fenders, eliminating the Bonneville words from the previous year. The Bonneville continued to offer many standard features including Courtesy Lamps, Padded Dash, Extra Rear Seat Foam Cushions and many other options not available as standard on other Pontiac Models. The standard Bonneville engine used the base 389 platform backed by a three speed Synchromesh transmission which produced 255 HP.

"Pontiac produced many variants of the 389 and 421 engine.  A good start for some background is Cars & Parts "Catalog of American Car ID Numbers 1960-69" (ISBN 1-880524-11-2)  But it can be confusing if you're not too familiar with the Pontiac "numbers"  You will note that the 23B is a manual transmission motor, and it is also an RPO (regular producton option) and a police interceptor engine.  That information you can find in the 1964 Pontiac shop manual. The only Bonneville specific 306 hp engine is the 29N, but was only available in models 2840,2850, and 2890. " "The highest horsepower engine available for the Bonneville was the 45B (manual trans 370hp) or the 50Q (auto trans 370hp).  The standard hydromatic engines were the 27P (auto trans) and the 28P (auto trans with AC) - both rated at 303 hp.  These were also the standard engine for the GP, but had different designators to indicate GP vs Bonneville."
