In 1962, Ford introduced two new series: the Galaxie 500 and Galaxie 500XL. Standard equipment started off with the choice of 11 different vinyl and nylon plastic fabric interiors, 13 Diamond Lustre Enamel exteriors, white vinyl headlining, deluxe arm rests both front and rear, electric clock, backup lights, metal drip roof rail, metal body side molding, and more.
Frame members received a new redesign to isolate the passenger compartment and cut out noise, vibration and ride harshness while the body rocker panels were zinc to armor against rust and corrosion.
Station wagons available for 1962 were the 4-door Ranch Wagon, Country Squire or Country Sedan and came in 6 or 9 passenger models. Along with options such as the Power Tailgate Window and MagicAire Heater there was the Console Range Radio, Lifeguard Jr. door locks and cargo cover. Inside, 93.5 cu. ft of space provided ample storage over 10 feet long with tailgate open – 8 feet with tailgate closed.
For greater economy and longer life, Ford developed engines that have a Short Stroke, low friction design with free-turning overhead intake and exhaust valves, super filter air cleaner and a high capacity in line 30,000 mile fuel filtering system. The Ford Galaxie could be equipped with the optional 300-hp Thunderbird 390 Special V8 among 4 other choices with the standard 3-speed manual, Fordomatic, dual-range Cruise-O-Matic, Overdrive, and a 4-speed manual available with most engines.
