This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 convertible has everything you love in an upper-echelon muscle car. It has growling power from the numbers-matching big block power, the control of four-on-the-floor, and true drop-top rarity. And it has an awesome factory red-on-red style that's fully showcased thanks to being fresh off a decade-long restoration.
We're told the restoration on this car is extremely fresh, but all you have to do is take one look at it to know. This may have been born a Cranberry red car, but the gloss and shine it gives off today lets you this is a recent professional application. In fact, the consignor is a paint and body professional, so you know this car is going to have amazing panels that are butter-smooth to the touch. The black SS stripes have even been cleared in with this paintwork. They join the blacked-out grille and blacked-out rear panel to create a subtle two-tone. So this color theme only gets better with the black roof in place...and there are very few convertibles you can say about that! The cowl induction hood, SS badging, and large exhaust tips add to the performance look, and the shining chrome bumpers give this a premium appearance. It's a detailed vintage muscle car package, right down to the SS mag wheels with Goodyear Polyglas tires. Chevelles from this era need a buildsheet to confirm Super Sport status, and we have a copy of one. So the true Super Sport confidence goes much deeper than just badging and the suspension.
While the fresh folding top looks excellent, we love it even more when it gets powered down. After all, there's just something extra aggressive about a red interior against a red exterior on a muscle car... and this one was born this way! Of course, the restoration means everything feels new. The crisp look of the taut door panels, smooth dash, plush carpeting, and nice cushy feel of the seats means this one was made to share with family and friends. And if they're fans of vintage cars as much as you are, then they'll love pointing out classic details, like the working Delco AM/FM radio. But the best treats are reserved for the driver. This feels like a true classic muscle car with the NK4 sports steering wheel, curved Hurst shifter, and full U14 gauge package with large speedo and tach.
While the interior and exterior have been given big investments, there was still plenty left in the budget for the engine bay. The numbers-matching 396/402 cubic-inch L34 V8. This has the tidy look that has been treated with respect. But since this is also a true muscle car hero, they made sure to get the most out of the original block. So we have receipts detailing a rebuilt head in 2018 as well as receipts for the pistons and crankshaft. It has also been enhanced with components like an Edelbrock AVS2 four-barrel carburetor, an Edelbrock aluminum intake, Pertronix Flame Thrower III coil, and headers feeding the dual exhaust. And you'll love how the four-speed manual transmission gives you full control over this muscular V8 and its rumbling soundtrack. Power steering, power brakes, and front discs front make the drive nice. And you even have proper Super Sport suspension with the limited-slip 12-bolt rear end, boxed suspension arms, and a rear sway bar.
The sale comes with the restoration photos, buildsheet copy, and folders packed with build receipts. There were only about 7,500 Chevelle convertibles produced in this iconic year, and you are likely to never again find a restored SS that has been given this much attention. So if you want an amazing example of drop-top muscle car royalty, call today!
