The best source to answer your questions would be a factory Shop manual for your car. These are available as reprints or on CD. Sometimes you can find an original on auction sites. The numbers on the door tag are warranty numbers and are marked as such. They are not to be used for VIN numbers. When new, these did match the real VIN, but since a door could have been replaced don't rely on these numbers. There is a lot of information pertaining to the car on the ) door tag Warranty Plate). if your car does have it's original tag you are in luck. The real VIN is stamped on the top of the inner fender panel, on both the passenger and driver side. It is visible on the driver side through a notch in the top of the front fender flange. The passenger side fender does not have the notch, there for the VIN is only visible with the passenger fender removed. See the pictures of my Sprint. The VIN number for a '64 Sprint hardtop (Sprint Convertible in (parentheses) will be in the following format: 4 R 13 (14) F 123456 4 Denotes1964 model year R This letter calls out assembly plant (R) is San Jose 13 Denotes Sprint 2dr Hardtop. (14) denotes a Sprint convertible. F This is the engine code, calling out a 260 2v engine. This was the only engine available in a '64 Sprint. No F, not a Sprint. Period. 123456 This is the consecutive unit build number for the particular factory. For Falcons this number started at 100001. Regarding engine numbers. Ford typically didn't start stamping the VIN number on engines until the later 60's. On some high performance applications such as HP 289's, 427's, etc. the factory did stamp the car's VIN on the engine. Other than by comparing casting dates with the car's build date, you can't be sure you have the original 260 engine, and even then you can't be positive unless you know the history of the car.

The V.I.N. # and other pertinent information ar found on a plate riveted to the rear edge of the left front door. The engine number is stamped on the top surface of the engine block near the crankcase breather pipe(front left side). The car serial number is composed of two sections, the first five units giving the year, assembly plant, model and engine type. The second section gives consecutive order of production.
