car has sat (needs rings), went to start it and... nothing. began the usual checks, batt cables and connections try to start and...nothing. in my search for the problem I encountered what looks like a switch on the column , with a cable or wire that runs up towards the steering wheel. I have taken lots of chevy's apart, and never saw this in a 62. I will attempt to put a photo .

yes it has the neutral safety switch which is activated by a tab on the shifter tube, the switch I am looking at is farther down , it resembles the ignition switch in late model vehicles and is activated by a 'push-pull' wire.

if an automatic there should be a safety switch that also is backup light switch. would have 2 purple wires for starter. one from ign switch, the other going to starter. to jump start you can make contact between the small post on starter and the one the battery cable is on.
