Second symbol identifies assembly plant: E = Mahwah, N.J.; F = Dearborn, Mich.; H=Lorain Ohio; J = Los Angeles, Calif.; K = Kansas City, Kan.; R = San Jose Calif.; S = Pilot Plant; T = Metuchen, N.J.; W = Wayne, Mich, Y = Wixom, Mich.; Z = St. Louis, Mo. Third and fourth symbols are body code (See Body/Style Number column in charts below). Fifth symbol identifies engine: (Comet) U = 170 cid six; 4 = 170 cid six (export),F = 260 cid V-8; 6 = 260 cid V-8 (export); D = 289 cid/210-hp V-8; K = 289 cid/271-hp V-8; R = 427 cid/425-hp V-8; (Mercury) Y=390cid/250 hp V-8 2V; H = 390 cid/266-hp V-8 2V; Z = 390 cid/300-hp V-8 4V; P = 390 cid/330-hp V-8 4V (high-performance); 9 = 390 cid V-8 (export); Q = 427 cid/410-hp V-8; R = 427 cid/425-hp V-8. Last six symbols are sequential production number starting at 500001. Body plate on front body pillar gives VIN, body code, color, trim, date, engine, transmission and axle codes.
