Sounds like timing of a exaust leak. If it is timing total timing might be out it would make it pop on top end.

i would have to say sticky valve or timing is off from my experience messing with gm motors

Had a customer once that had a exhaust leak after the header that caused this reaction and yes check the timing a 2400 then 3000 see if she advances to fare on the 3k mark
