I guess I should have paid attention to the category you posted your question under. Silly me.
Here is some information that I found for decoding a 1962 Pontiac. It seems that your VIN is missing the first # which should be a 2.
VIN is located on left front door post
1st symbol:
21 - Tempest
23 - Catalina
26 - Star Chief
27 - Bonneville Safari
28 - Bonneville
29 - Grand Prix
2nd & 3rd symbols = the year
62 - 1962
4th symbol is where the vehicle was assembled:
P = Pontiac, Michigan
The remaining symbols is the sequential production number beginning at 1001 for each factory
Yours was the 18,431 vehicle produced

The only way to officially decode what engine came factory installed in your Pontiac is to order the PHS documentation. The vin or trim tag is not going to list that information, only the factory build sheet will list it. Have you checked under seats, above the glove box liner, under the carpet for a build sheet? You never know, you might get lucky and find something, saving you about 50 dollars for a PHS report.
