The ign wire must remain on when you let off the button. Why not put a ignition switch on the column and be done with it. On the top of the coulmn down by the brake petale, there is a switch with lot's of wire's hooked to it. Or take a test light and have some one trun the key to start will you holed the test light to the small wire on the starter soleniod. If it don't light more than likely its the starter switch at the bottom of the steering column.

THERE ARE 2 WIRES THAT GO TO THE ING SIDE OF THE COIL .ONE OF THEM GOES TO THE STARTER,WHICH SENDS 12 VOLTS TO THE COIL WHEN TURNING THE STARTER.THE OTHER GOES TO THE IGN SWITCH IT IS A RESISTER WIRE MADE TO CUT THE VOLTAGE.THIS WIRE HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH BREAKING TRY REPLACEING IT FROM IGN SWITCH TO COIL THIS SHOULD CURE YOUR PROBLEM.TO TROBLE SHOOT YOU COULD RUN A WIRE FROM POSITIVE BATTERY POST TO ING SIDE OF COIL.I DROVE A 73 CHEV WAGON 500 MILES ON VACATION THAT WAY TO GET HOME ONE TIME
