I had the same problem and it turned out to be the lobe on the cam wore down enough so that the fuel pump would not work any more. Without going through the hassel of replacing the cam I went to Summit Racing Equiptment and bought a front mount (in the engine compartment) electric fuel pump and mounted it in the same location as the original pump. Worked for me for the last three years.

Is fuel pump push rod in place? Is fuel present at fuel pump?

take gas cap off and blow on the line feeding fuel pump. if you hear bubbling in the tank the line is open. if not maybe the screen on the suction line likely has a varnished up pickup screen. it is faster and less headaches to pull the tank and clean it out if it has set a long time. even after tank cleaning an inline filter catches amazing amounts of crud. when you get fuel to the pump put the line that feeds carb in a jug and check there. if there is fuel there then go to carb and check for stuck float.

i had the same problem with a 235 engine and i found out you have to prime the fuel pump fill it up with gas than put it on hope this works with you

The fuel line has a hole in it. check the rubber hose at the fuel pump first, and at the tank sending unit. IAs well as the steel line it's probally rusted throw. If that doe's not answer the question the steel shaft that pushes the pump saft is missing or worn bad. If thats not the answer than the lob on the cam is worn down to far to push the pump shaft.
