I have a 67 fairlane gt with an original 390 4-speed. The transmission in it now is for a 66 gt. I am going to put a correct 67 4-speed in the car. How do i find out if it came with a wide or close 4-speed? The 390 is a high performance rated at 335 hp with a 3:25 to 1 ratio rear. The door tag showes a 5 for transmission.

The wide ratio trans was primarily for small block engines to get them moving. The wide ratio used a 2.78 first gear and was closely spaced between 1-3 with a big rpm drop going into 4. The close ratio used a 2.32 first gear and had equal rpm drops through each gear. The 66-67 390 gt should be the same. If it has the 1 3/8 input shaft it will be a close ratio. The 428 drag racers used the wide ratio trans but it had to be modified to accept the big input shaft.
