I have a 1963 galaxie 500xl. I was digging through the VIN codes, etc yesterday. On the plate my trim number is 83. Every resource I can find shows trim 82 then 84 (skips 83). The trim itself has white vinyl sides and a black/white crosshatch which looks grey. Could 83 be a custom code? The car is pretty much original so I'm thinking the interior is original. Thanks,

Ford literature during the '60, and maybe even today, was always evolving. For example, an early '63 shop manual would not have information on a '63 1/2 fastback Galaxie. It is quite possible the trim code you have is for later production car and the information you researched was from an early manual. I have come across this with a '64 Falcon Sprint. The trim code for the June '64 car was not listed in my October '63 '64 shop manual. Hope this helps.

I have a 1963 Galaxie 500XL convertible and mine is a trim code "83" also --83 is the code for white vinyl interior for XL's only--very rare, especially in convertibles. Your car was built in Los Angeles (the "J" in your VIN# tells us that) and the DSO#74 (District special order) tells us it was ordered to go to the Seattle area--Mine has the exact same #'s in it's code, also built in LA and sent to Seattle. Your car is a 2 door hardtop in "Raven black" , 390 4 barrel, automatic and was built March 28 1963
