I need to know if there were ever any notorious problems with the 1974 240 6 cylinder engine. Meaning common troubles this engine may have had from the factory. Such as leaky heads or gaskets, bad or weak piston rings, any valve or lifter troubles etc... I would like to know if this was an over all healthy engine, or if there were any noted recalls over the years. What is the overall average mileage rating of this motor before having to replace any main engine entrials?

Near bulletproof if maintained properly. I had a '67 Mercury 100 w/ the 240; developed some rod brg 'knocking' but that was due to high mileage.

the 240 ford engines were used in a 6 cyl class of race cars back in 68-73 years at berlin raceway in grand rapids mi with much success . they were very reliable .the 300 cid ford is a upgraded version of the 240 , ford would not have kept it so long if not good. an engine is only as good as it is maintained.
