The car starts fine when you short it from under the hood (starter). But turns over hard and burns out the coil when trying by ignition switch inside car. Any Help or Suggestions?

It sounds as if someone has removed the ballast resistor from the firewall, and wired the coil up to a straight 12 volt wire. The ballast resistor is a white ceramic resistor mounted on the firewall, that lowers the voltage to the coil to 6 volts. The ignition system only operates on 6 volts even though you have a 12 volt battery.
