my partner is restorng a 64 Impala for me in California, but when the old owner painted the car they took off the the VIN tags. I have to ship the car to Hawaii, but I need the tags first. CHP told my partner if he can show them the VIN somewhere else on the car, they would make a new tag. Does anybody know where Chevy could have put the VIN ion the car? Thank you

Also, check with HI dmv to see about getting a new VIN and title. In some states it's possible if you have the bill of sale. I imaging it will significantly affect the value of a restored car, though. My father has a 41 Chevy with a VIN that was issued by the state of North Dakota (or SD?). It is currently titled in PA and there was no trouble with the transfer. Since the car is now a street rod, the new VIN is no big deal as far as authenticity / value is concerned.

One place it will be is on top the frame drivers side about the middle of the door, A word of advice I would not spend another dime on that car untill you get the V.I.N. verified, you have no idea if the car is stolen, and if you take it to CHP and indeed it is stolen,it will be confiscated on the spot !!
