14 years ago in CHEVROLET
My neighbor has a 68 327 malibu that has been outside uncovered for at least 15 years. He is convinced it is worth 3 grand only because of the barrett jackson phenom. He isnt a car guy though. I told him at best it is worth 300 and thats just for the 4 speed munci in it. The motor doesnt run and hasnt been turned over since he parked it how ever many years ago. Can anyone give me an idea as to what its worth?
Like all great chevy's the trunk is probably gone, the quarters rockers and floors are most likely gone. It has been sitting so does anyone know if the cowls and the firewalls rot out bad? The interior is trash and the hood is rotten from all the leaves sitting on it and so forth.
If any one can give me an idea of worth (im guessing nothing) let me know.
Thanks
you are on the money its worth about 300.00 ...but not seeing it is hard to tell you , some 4spds bring 600-1200
I agree, although 3grand sounds a bit on the high side, people seem less and less troubled with what they have to start with these days. 10-20 years ago someone would have looked at that rust bucket you pictured and passed knowing that a better resto candidate was out their. Those days seem to be drying up quickly, good luck finding super solid CA, AZ, TX cars anymore!
Your friend might not be too unrealistic. It's hard to say what someone will pay for a car. Especially if they are in desperate need of some parts.
I recently saw a 1970 Barracuda sell on an auction site for almost $4000 - with no engine, transmission, interior, etc plus the floors were rusted through. Here are a couple of pictures of it.
From the sounds of it, it sounds pretty bad. It would be interesting to hear how your friend describes it. It's probably only worth what the parts will sell for and the rest hauled off to the crusher.
Not that this information is worth more than a grain of salt, but here is what collectorcarmarket.com has set for a value.
Malibu 2dr Hardtop......#5=$850.....#4=$3,200.....#3=$7,625.....#2=$11,175......#1=$17,500

As for rust.
Surface rust is the only color on the car. It is bad. I have restored a lot of cars, never one for myself because I was working for someone but this is hands down the worst car I have seen. I do not have a picture of it but I will find one for you to give you an example. of what it may be
sorry,
2 door hardtop original 327 4 speed car. Modern modifications from the 80's (bored out block and some other things)
Some of the parts could be worth something? Its so difficult to say and value something when you cannot see it. You mention rust but how bad is it? I have seen quarter panels on cars that look great but when you start stripping the car and really digging into it you find rust INSIDE the wheel wells or rocker panels, rust that you may have never seen before. I have also seen just the reverse of it.
True, it doesn't sound like you are describing an ultra rare 427 Yenko Malibu but these days ALL old iron has some value!
2 door? 4 door? Hardtop? Sedan?
Without seeing any photos of it and from what you describe, price could be anywhere from a couple hundred bucks to $800.
