For the R, an Eaton blower is bolted on, spinning five percent faster than the one in the XJR and XKR and exhaling 13.1 pounds of boost per inch through twin air-to-water intercoolers! This example was built in the company's Castle Bromwich Assembly in Birmingham, England and like all S-Type examples, it has the firm's slinky, sinewy and sexy styling from the period, backed by the muscle of a 4.2L Supercharged V-8. Finished in Platinum (code MDZ), the car's paint and trim are in overall excellent order, the bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the trunk area looks good and the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body. This Cat rolls on Continental Extreme Contact radials, size 245/40ZR18 in front and 275/35ZR18 in back. Each one is mounted on a factory, five-star alloy wheel. The wheels are in excellent order while the tires are in very good condition. Within reside Brembo disc brakes. Under that counterbalanced hood is Jaguar's hand-built 4.2L, DOHC, 32-valve V-8 with variable valve timing and an Eaton M112 supercharger. The engine makes about 390 horsepower and 387 lbs-ft of torque. It is joined to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission (code ZF 6HP26). Driver convenience features include electronic climate control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, power and heated sideview mirrors, power and heated front seats. Safety equipment included Xenon headlights, dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes. Inside, the cream-colored leather interior is in overall very good order with leather-wrapped bucket seats up front and a cozy rear bench. The contrasting black carpet looks great, as does the cream headliner with a sunroof. The four-spoke steering wheel is ready for more adventures while the inner door panels and dashboard echo the rest of the interior's condition. Bird's-Eye Maple wood trim adorns the dash and inner door panels. The center console and console-mounted J-gate shift lever are in fine form while a factory AM/FM stereo with CD player rounds out the interior. The first S-Types ("X200" 1999-2002) are distinguished by a U-shaped center console and optional touchscreen navigation system in the 2003 and later models. The traditional leaping jaguar bonnet ornament was optional even though it is approved by the US and EU standards and breaks away in the case of an accident. Subsequent models ("X202," "X204," "X206"; the last digit denoting the model year) have the Jaguar logo incorporated within the radiator grille and a more traditional 'looped' styling for the center console. The supercharged S-Type R (Jaguar STR for short) joined the lineup in 2002 and the hope was that it would compete with BMW's M5 and the Mercedes E55 AMG. The R was powered by the newly revised hand-built 4.2L V-8 with an Eaton M112 supercharger, producing 400 horsepower. It included 18-inch alloy wheels, wire-mesh grille and monochromatic paint. The R also has a rear apron, side-skirts, and front apron with built-in fog-lamps, a rear spoiler, a brace located near the rear subframe and R badging on the boot lid and both front fenders (wings). Also added on the 2003 model was an electronic parking-brake paddle-switch that replaced the conventional manually operated lever for the rear brakes. Competition to this Jag in 2003 included Acura's RL, Audi's RS6, Cadillac's CTS, BMW's M5, Infiniti's I30, Lexus ES 300, Lincoln's LS and Mercedes-Benz's E55 AMG.
