A V8-powered hardtop convertible truck that's fully done to look like a retro-cool street machine is usually saved for corporate concept cars and specialty SEMA builds, but for a few brief years, Chevrolet delivered it with the SSR. So it's great to find a low-mileage example looking so bold and original.
Slingshot Yellow is arguably the most vibrant color offered during the SSR's few years in production. And quite frankly, it's exactly what you want on an instant classic like this. After all, the design isn't being bashful, so the paint shouldn't be either. This car really came from an artist's mind with the bright full-width strip up front that instantly reminds us of Chevy's Advance Design trucks. And hints of brightwork continue on the body with the alloy wheels and running boards. The fenders and grille continue this retro-cool look, but the full lines have been integrated into a very sleek body. The rounded roofline makes this one quite attractive, and the way it neatly folds away without a trace creates an even more striking roadster-style machine. So the SSR is all about both art and science.
Because this is meant to be enjoyed with the top down, the interior is a well-coordinated package. Black always looks terrific against yellow. You especially know this, because there's a Slingshot Yellow convertible boot that provides a waterfall of color all the way through the center console. The SSR was a specialty machine with a high price, and so that means it also gives you the best in luxury features. The high-back bucket seats individually power adjust to give you and your passenger the ideal comfort position. There's power windows, power locks, keyless entry/alarm, dual front airbags, side airbags, ABS, tilt steering column, cruise control, power steering, automatic headlights, and a premium Bose AM/FM/CD stereo. There's a nicely finished huge trunk that reminds you of a truck bed with its wood slats, but it closes securely with the full hard tonneau. And because you have both heated seats and cold-blowing air conditioning, you and your passenger can remain comfortable with the top down no matter if it's a crisp fall evening or noon in the summertime.
This 2005 model represents a pivotal year in SSR's short run. The V8 was upgraded to the 6.0-liter LS2 unit. This fuel-injected powerhouse offered a healthy boost in power to 390 hp. So it's great to have the numbers-matching motor still looking so fresh and clean in the engine bay. The four-speed automatic transmission is a stout unit built to handle this V8's power, and at the same time, it provides silky smooth shifts all the way into overdrive. So while this was built to look like a truck, this also was made to drive like a muscle machine. That's why you have tubular control arms on the rear suspension, rear sway bar, and four-wheel power disc brakes.
Complete with owner's manual, this is the bold, powerful, and well-presented custom car direct from Chevy. It's time to get your hands on this instant classic, call today!
