2005 Chrysler Crossfire

The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat sports car that was sold by Chrysler and built by Karmann of Germany for the 2004 to 2008 model years. Developed during the union of Daimler and Chrysler, the two-seater is based on the Mercedes-Benz R170 platform which shares 80% of its components with the first generation SLK. The second generation SLK was built on a new R171 platform starting in the 2005 model year; the R170 platform was essentially handed down to Chrysler for use in building the Crossfire. The name "Crossfire" refers to the two character lines that run from front to rear along the body sides - their crease directions cross below the mirrors on the door panels. Conceived during the period of Chrysler's ownership by Daimler-Benz, the name also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.

For consignment, a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire. With design similarities courtesy to its merger company Mercedes Benz, even being built on the same platform as the first generation SLK, its sporty looks carry on to today. Only built until 2008, not very many examples exist, but we will not at this time use the word rare! With 55,684 original miles, this two owner car has been well kept, always garaged by both owners, and meticulously maintained. Powered by a 3.2 liter V6 is not shabby either. An enjoyable sports car, rolling down the highway with a smile on your face.

Reminiscent of the SLK of yore, this ribbed hood long front-end teardrop edged headlights car even has the side vents on the front quarters with horizontal chromed trim spears just like the motherland original. A horizontal ribbed swept back grille and body matching (Cobalt Blue) integrated bumper all rounded over nicely creates the slick through the aroid front end. A wide chromed windshield surround accentuates the swept back look, and a body matching hardtop all rounded over and working its way to the rear glass on to the deck, aero slicing is always the key. Speaking of which a thin spoiler adds to the sportiness as does the rounded tail lights and another integrated body matching curved rear bumper, with dual centrally located exhaust exits. Here the German influence appears more Porsche Carrera, but still distinctly Chrysler. 18 and 19-inch wheels with some brake dust markings are wrapped by Michelin tires which are like new, and on all 4 corners.

Inside quality smooth two-tone light and dark gray leather wraps the high back buckets for the two passengers. which have power adjustments. A sexy silver console races forward to the dash and has a glovebox in back and also houses the parking brake lever and shifter. As it rises to the dash all "aluminum" plastic parts create a central panel and a machine age look. Here we have the climate controls and the factory AM/FM/CD stereo capable of handling your auditory pleasures is seen. More toggles are present as well as a 12-volt power port. To the dash front where we see green backlit instruments in analog format with digital display inserts to show odometer and clock. Note the switch to move the shifter to Tiptronic automatic stick shifter mode. A clean headliner is above, and with a push of a button the rear lift gate opens to reveal a nice clean felted dark gray storage area.

Within the original clean unrestored engine bay sits a 3.2 liter fuel injected V6. On back is a 5-speed automatic transmission which is a Mercedes Benz 5G-tronic and bringing up the rear is a 3.27 geared rear axle.

Extremely clean and well cared for with no rust, surface or otherwise seen anywhere underneath. A stainless-steel dual exhaust snakes its way rearward to the center dual exit. Independent coil spring suspension is on front, and a 5-link coil spring suspension on the back. Power disc brakes are reserved for all 4 corners. No runs, drips or errors under here!

As expected, it fired right up, and on the test track performed without a hitch. Smooth powerful acceleration, good handling, and the 5G-tronic automatic stick shifter worked well. Straight bias free panic stopping, and all functions were operational with the exception of the passenger's heated seat at the time of my test drive.

Emulating a Mercedes SLK is not the worst thing that can happen and this car morphs that design into a distinctive Chrysler American sports car feel, retaining the technology from the Benz. Nice design, low drag coefficient, snappy interior and some good power. We have a wiener..uh sorry a WINNER! (I got caught up in my German :-0)
