Alaska Sports Car Club

To organize a group of sports car owners and enthusiasts in order to enable them to get maximum use and enjoyment from sports car ownership and operation. The Alaska Sportscar Club has been in existence since the early 60's sanctioning a series of year round events ranging from ice racing to summer road racing. While our rules allow for many different vehicle types, the predominant racers are VW. Everything from Beetles with beetle power through Golf powered sports racers and tube frame Porsche powered Beetles. Ice racing begins in early January and runs until mid March. A road course is plowed out on a large lake when the ice is at least 18" thick. The course is typically a 1-1.25 mile road course with speeds ranging from 30 to 100 mph. Classes are street studs [IT cars], super studs [tires with sheet metal screws] and rubber to ice [no studs of any kind]. February is when the "longest running street race in the country", the Fur Rondy Grand Prix, is held on the downtown streets of Anchorage. This challenging event is 9 tenths mile of lefts and rights featuring mostly wet asphalt (with a little ice and snow at times) and six foot ice walls -- the snow/ice/concrete act as containment for many different classes of cars. Classes range from Nascar Late model and Trucks-Legends-and our Sportscar club classes of IT and GT[Stock/not Stock]. Each class has its own schedule for this 2 day event. Memorial day is the start of the summer road race season. We head to Tanacross for a our fastest event of the year. This is an old WW2 refueling airport that is about 350 miles from Anchorage ---located near Tok, Alaska on the way to the Canadian Border, it can snow/rain or be sunny and warm. The course is about 2 miles long and lots of fun. Then we head 125 miles south to Soldotna for our June/July events at another airport-this course is about 1.25 miles long. Great Fun. Then season ends on Labor Day at Tanacross again. Our season consists of about 15 full racing days spread across the state. Check out the club web site for pictures and more information.
