Weighing in at a robust 13,000-plus pounds, commanding the asphalt on six 20\" tires and decked out in olive drab paint, with signature white stars on its doors to differentiate it from its enemies in battle, this 1968 Kaiser M35 2.5 Ton Deuce and a Half cuts a singular figure. If you\'re of a certain age, you might have seen this supersized vehicle plying its trade, transporting both troops and cargo during the Vietnam War, or at any other time during its half century of faithful military service for that matter, but there\'s a pretty fair chance you haven\'t seen one tooling around the asphalt at home. This venerable workhorse greets the present day in impressive condition. Sure, you can see evidence of its toils here and there on its outsized exterior, but it\'s running strong and is well-positioned for plenty of future miles. And just imagine the double-takes you\'ll get from behind the wheel of this classic.
As you can imagine, the spartan interior wasn\'t designed for luxury, but rather for reliable usage in trying environments. As such, you won\'t find much in the way of comfort and convenience features inside these doors, but make no mistake, this is a very evocative driving environment that\'s sure to elevate your mood as soon as you step inside and the split-bench seat is completely functional in its present condition. The original gauges still hold their positions at the center of the dash and, while the gas gauge may require a bit of attention to get back online, the rest of the displays seem to be in good working order.
This truly unique ride is powered by a 478-cubic-inch inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine that prefers diesel fuel but, if the situation calls for it, can also operate on kerosene and even gasoline in an emergency, as long as that gasoline is combined with clean motor oil in the proper ratio. The engine is enhanced by an LTD-465-1C turbocharger that gained a reputation for providing better performance than its rivals and is in fine working order, starting up promptly via a sequence of switches mounted on the dashboard and combining with a 5-speed manual transmission. It\'s not often that we can refer to a vehicle as having six-wheel drive, but this classic qualifies, and the feature combines with a live front axle and is activated by a 2-speed transfer case.
