1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe

Excerpt from the foreword section of the original owner's manual... "The fact that you are the owner of a new Ford car is, in itself, an indication that you have a keen appreciation of a well-designed, carefully manufactured automobile. It has been designed to perform faithfully for many thousands of miles, and Ford Motor Company has the utmost confidence that this car will fulfill your expectations." I think this wraps it up nicely!

For consignment this beautifully iconic Ford Deluxe. Wonderful condition all around and looking exactly like it did when new. Presenting very nicely, and a great driver, I can attest to this from firsthand experience.

Deep dark black covers all the straight, dent and rust free, steel panels that make up the exterior of this car. The paint is in good condition with only minor inclusions, touch ups and a few areas of paint pop. Up front, a very nice art nouveau style grille is flanked by 2 teardrop shaped headlights which are framed in deluxe oversized bezels. Large swooping fenders front and rear provide the framing for the rubber topped running boards, meanwhile a swooping roofline melts down into the trucklid after passing by a 2 pane rear window. Chrome and write work are excellent and I cannot get enough of the Sergeant stripe tail lights with blue dots added. Ford Deluxe dog dish style hubcaps and trim rings frame matching black steel wheels, and all are wrapped with Firestone wide white wall bias ply tires.

Like the original mohair, new tan material lines the door panels and stretches over the front split bench. The seat sits within a tan metal tub and looks near showroom new. Behind the split bench is a storage area topped by another storage tray. It is not known if this is the way the original car was, or if this option was available, however with this installed, this car could have been the ultimate salesman coupe. Factory gauges are installed into the pristine dash, which is maroon metal top over a tan metal face. A beautiful yellow cream gauge cluster is in front of the driver, and plenty of horizontal chrome grillwork for the center. Noted is a clock in the center of the glovebox and hanging below this dash is the handle to open the fresh air cowl. Fronting the dash is the original pristine 2 metal spoked steering wheel with a bakelite rim. A black rubber mat covers the floors and presents very nicely.

Within the original engine bay is the correct 221ci Flathead V8 engine that our consignor states has had a recent tune up. A 3-speed transmission shifted on the column is noted and a 3.78 geared rear axle brings up the back. Also, a word about the engine, it is a very clean flathead, as one can see, and has been very well maintained, with no corrosion, and within a very well restored engine bay.

As expected, well restored and very solid with only minor surface rust on untreated components. Transverse leaf springs are on front and rear as are drum brakes. A dual exhaust system with glasspack style mufflers handles the exhale and presents with a surface rusted finish. No worries under here!

This car starts and runs as it should, with a good clutch, and 85hp it actually can cruise at highway speeds with some time to get there. A straight bias free stopper, and what few functions this has to offer all work.

A wonderful example of the 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe with a salesman's flair and all the art deco cues you can shake a stick at. Very clean, and very smooth driver.
