MotoeXotica Classic Cars presents this white on blue 1956 Continental Mark II. This Mark II, like all of them, was produced at the Allen Park Body and Assembly in Allen Park, Michigan. This example is one of only 2,550 Mark IIs made in 1956.
This is a very early Mark II, made on October 9, 1955 and was the second example made that day. This particular Mark II was originally sold by Selby Motors in Tucson, Arizona to Lloyd Ritter. Between 1975 and 1984 it was owned by Suburban Motors in West Virginia. It came with the following optional equipment air-conditioning and bumper guards.
This Continental wears a handsome white exterior. The paint and trim, windows and lights are all in satisfactory order while the bodywork is straight and solid. There are blemishes at the front of the hood, and on the rear bumper.
This Mark II wears Goodyear wide whitewall tires mounted on steel wheels wearing factory wheel covers on all four wheels.
Under the hood is Lincolns 368 CID Y-block V-8 backed by a Turbo-Drive three-speed automatic transmission and 3.07:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power steering, power brakes and power front seats.
Other standard equipment included an AM radio, whitewall tires and a heater.
Inside, the cars blue and white Bridge of Weir leather interior (code 1N6B) is in similar satisfactory order as the exterior. The cars seats and carpet are in decent order while the carpet is in mediocre condition. The steering wheel is in good shape, as is the instrument panel while the inner door panels are in less-than-ideal shape. The wipers are inoperable and completing the interior is a factory AM radio.
The Continental Mark II was revived in late 1955 as a separate marque, produced by a separate division of Ford Motor Company, as its sole model. This version was a unique design with the highest quality control ever seen in the automobile industry. High-class luxury abounded in the new Continental, and with very limited availability, it appeared even more exclusive than the original. This car was so exclusive, even celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley and political figures like the Shah of Iran and President Dwight D. Eisenhower had to follow Fords protocol to qualify for ownership. Actress Elizabeth Taylor received a Mark II from Warner Brothers as a gift; its exterior custom painted to match her eyes.
More important, the car was the personal vehicle of choice for many Ford family members. Josephine Ford, Henry Fords sole granddaughter, and his three grandsons, Benson, Henry II and William Clay Ford all piloted Continental Mark IIs. The Mark II sold new for $10,400, the equivalent of a newRolls-Royceor twoCadillacs at that time.
Ford fun factoids 98 percent of 1956 Continentals came with power brakes; 85 percent had power seats; 86 percent had power windows; 94 percent had radios; 99 percent had heaters; and 98 percent had whitewall tires.
Competition to the Mark II in 1956 included Bentleys Continental, Cadillacs Eldorado Seville, Chryslers New Yorker Newport two-door hardtop, Jaguars Mark VIII, Lincolns own Premiere Coupe, Mercedes-Benzs 300d Adenauer, Packards Caribbean Hardtop and Rolls-Royces Silver Cloud.
Whether youre a Ford fan, a Lincoln fan or even a 1950s collector, Continental Mark IIs make a statement that is hard to ignore. If you want a rolling foundation for a new vehicle project or if youre up to the task of restoring this beauty to showroom new, you owe it to yourself to stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars and see it for yourself.
