1970 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster
Zora Arkus-Duntov (December 25, 1909 April 21, 1996) was a Belgian-born American engineer whose work on the Chevrolet Corvette earned him the nickname "Father of the Corvette." He is sometimes erroneously referred to as the inventor of the Corvette, whereas that title belongs to Harley Earl. He was also a successful racing driver, taking class victories in 1954 and 1955 24 Heures du Mans.
Taking pride in one's accomplishments is an integral part of human nature. Being excited about something tends to rub off on whomever you may be interacting with. I had the pleasure to experience both these emotions first hand with the consigner of this 'Vette when I spoke to him about his car for consignment. so much so I was ready to buy it! Looking at the actual car, running your hand over its undulating Sting Ray surfaces, hearing the healthy heartbeat of the awesome 454ci LS5 mill, and going for a personal spin to get an idea about the car, now I'm excited!
The fortunate recipient of a ground up restoration, your eye peels toward the beautiful Cortez Silver paint that matches exactly to what this car was born with. There are paint jobs, and there are really good paint jobs, and this my friends is one we can highlight here at Classic Auto Mall. The consigner states his goal was to have this car present as original, but if something needed replaced, he did not hesitate to do so. Careful attention was taken to only use OEM parts. Examples of this are bumpers, stainless rocker covers, badging, right down to the exhaust tips seen peeking out from the rear of the car. (At one point this car had side pipes but they were not correct, so they were removed). Even the tires were painstakingly replicated with bias ply wide O ovals...new as they would have come on the car from the factory. Topping the car off is a new OEM convertible top, which folds and unfolds like a dream.
As with the exterior virtually new with OEM Vinyl (more durable than leather in the convertible situation) buckets which are flanked by new door panels and fronted by new dash panels. The speedo/tach panel is original to this car; however, all other panels are ...you got it... OEM new! The original center console with shifter, and thermostat /airflow control wheels are original to the car. The sole non-working part on this car is the clock. It is Ok though because when you are taking this car for its Sunday drive, you do not want to have any sense of or track of time.
The original carburetor rebuilt with OEM parts and a fully working automatic choke, which means turn the key and this baby is running on fast idle, and after about a minute punch the gas slightly, and she's back to normal idle...no cheapo Holly replacement for this carb, instead $500.00 was dropped to keep it like the original. This tops a non-matching number, completely rebuilt 454ci LS5 V8 that sits proudly and snugly in the engine bay. A Stage 2 clutch, and new flywheel works with the newly rebuilt (not original to the car,) but correct transmission.
Like a broken record, but true...all new OEM suspension, bushings, brakes, shocks, steering mechanism, and rear components. Very mild surface rust, but a strong and sturdy frame, clean floorpans and toe kicks. Last but not least a new exhaust snakes its way from the 454 to the rear tips.
Essentially a 1970 example that looks and drives like it is 1970 all over again. Ignore all this numbers matching hyped baloney that people turn their noses up at. Just get in the darn thing and enjoy...now that's exciting!! It is important to note that with the purchase of this car you will receive all documentation as for receipts that were put into it. Also, consigner will surrender any and all parts that were replaced.
