1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS SS Convertible
RS on Camaro speak stands for Rally Sport which is available on all trim levels. It includes hidden headlights, and reverse lights below the bumper, as well as other trim options that could be had. It was. basically an appearance package, although you could have an RS/SS package which included a more powerful engine and the trimmings of an RS.
The RS was an appearance package that included hidden headlights, revised taillights with back-up lights under the rear bumper, RS badging, and exterior bright trim. The SS in this title stands for Super Sport and this car sports this option package as well.
Repainted Matador Red is the new addition to this otherwise original badging, brightwork, bumpers, and top. Some chips are noted along with cracks and crazing can be noted particularly on the lower section of the doors. A cream parchment (rare option) top is in good condition. RS option hidden headlights are functioning and are framed above by the horizontal stripe stretching across the hood on the front edge. This stripe makes its way rearward where it dies at doors end in a white spear shape. Stock Chevrolet Motor Company rally wheel trim and hubcaps are framed by Goodrich Radial T/A's. The RS gas cap is planted firmly in the center of the rear panel. Also seen are nicely preserved and shiny trimmings around the wheel wells and rockers.
Red stitched vinyl bucket seats with red piping highlighting, in good condition in front, and a matching motif bench seat in the rear make up the seating arrangement. All seats are in showroom condition. A center console shows an automatic shift handle that is designed right out of the 60's. (Looks like George Jetson would have used a similar one to control his flying car!) which is surrounded by wood appliqu. This wood works its way upward to where the radio and temp sliders are located in the center of the dash. Deep round angled analog gauges create the gauge cluster in front of the original RS steering wheel. Red carpet in good clean condition and is covered by badged rubber floor mats in black and red.
A GM orange/red block and intake manifold has shiny chromed valve covers and a chromed air cleaner holder atop and is showing in 396ci L35 V8 form. This engine is definitely numbers matching and has an incorrect 4bbl Quadrajet carburetor on top. A 3-speed numbers matching TH400 automatic transmission is behind this mill and it throws power rearward to a 12-bolt 3.07 posi rear axle. Very nice presentation under this hood for this RS-SS.
Underside is original, and no rust is present. Power front disc brakes, rear power drums, and a dual exhaust system are seen all in good condition. Looking all good underneath, just like the topside. Independent coil springs provide the ride for the front and leafs do the same for the rear.
A good driver, quick starter, smooth shifter, and some good grabby brakes. The car rode smoothly, and the interior was spacious. It's great to be able to put a top down on a nice day, and go for a spin so I can write about these fascinating cars!
A generation 1 first year pony car, completely restored, with an RS option package, and SS from as well as some great factory options. All surfaces interior and exterior are good to go, and in good working condition. Noteworthy is the original numbers matching drivetrain. A check back in time reveals that all advertising money went into the SS. Hence a beautiful option (RS) was somewhat ignored, creating a lesser seen Camaro, and seen right here at Classic Auto Mall. This Camaro has it all...
