DESCRIPTION
1976 Plymouth Volare Coupe
For consignment, a 1976 Plymouth Volare coupe with a title verified 102,248 actual miles. Anyone who knows the history of Volare\'s might be surprised to see one, surely survivors are rare today and would be an absolute blast to see at Cars and Coffee! More than 300,000 were built in \'76 alone.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.*
Exterior
The single stage blue paint shows some age and includes a dullness you might expect on a car that\'s now 50 years old. Some overspray is evident on outer trim, meaning this is likely not the original paint, but it\'s still a testimony of time. You can see some family resemblance here to its upscale cousin, Chrysler\'s Cordoba, especially with the shape of the front fascia, although the Volaretakes a decidedly squarer profile. In back, the rear fascia looks to have gained inspiration from the \'75 Duster with the leftover parts bin adding the tail lights. 14-inch Mopar Road wheels are wrapped in 225/70R14 tires with a late 2022 date code and white letters out present the sporty option. Imperfections include some surface rust, general fading, a chunk of grille missing, an open hole near the side mirror, aforementioned overspray, stains, drips, bubbles and blistering, missing trim, (comes with car), dings, more advance surface rust in the door jamb, evident filler, and some black rattle can overspray.
Interior
White vinyl is the interior of choice here beginning on door panels accented with simulated wood trim and a center stitch patterned section and both show a touch of patina but the only real damage is a tear in the driver\'s armrest. Inside, tall white bucket seats occupy the front and the driver\'s seat shows some heavy wear while the passenger seat and rear are in remarkably good condition and provide a nice contrast to the otherwise blue interior. This includes the steering wheel, showing some cracks on the rim, and the center console trimmed in woodgrain to match the faceplate of the instrument cluster which houses a simple and handsome array of gauges, controls, and an AM/FM radio, all in decent condition. The dash pad however, has seen better days while the shifter between the seats has held up well over plush blue carpet with low pile loop style on the actual floor, and present with some staining. Our black headliner is decent and showing some sags, contrasted sharply by white visors. The dome light is loose, and the lid on the center console is missing. The trunk has a black mat over metal that is in decent shape.
Drivetrain
A driver quality 318ci V8 is under the hood, rated at 155 horsepower and fueled by a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor over a newer intake. It\'s mated to an A904 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 7 inch rear axle. The car has power steering, power brakes, and originally air, but the A/C has been removed.
Undercarriage
Surface rust that\'s not unexpected is prevalent underneath and there is one spot of flaking rust on a frame rail, but overall it looks solid on this side of the car. A single exhaust travels to a Thrush muffler before exiting out back through a chrome tip. There is no catalytic converter on board. Power disc brakes occupy the front while power drums are out back. The unique suspension Sergio talks about is a transverse torsion bar up front matched with the typical leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
It\'s hard to distinguish cars from this period, lots of vinyl, plastic wood, and circular knobs. But that doesn\'t lessen the experience as we roll this survivor onto the test loop where the 318 delivers a fine ride and the car tracks straight. This was designed to get from A to B without a lot of fanfare and this car fulfills the mission. We note the horn, clock, and rear defogger light do not work but all other functions on board work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
More than a million Volares were produced, (and recalled at one point!), and provided inexpensive transportation to the masses. As we go from Bicentennial to the Semiquincentennial, anything from 1976 may be collectible, including the cars!
