1981 Chevrolet El Camino
Among the first hybrid vehicles in the history of the automotive industry, the Chevrolet El Camino, a combination car-truck, featured the practicality of a pickup truck, while maintaining performance car status. Chevy dealers across the U.S. showcase vintage models like the El Camino in their showrooms, while awaiting a possible new release. Chevy promoted it as, "the most beautiful thing that ever shouldered a load!". Even claiming, "It rides and handles like a convertible yet hauls and hustles like the workingest thing on wheels."
For consignment, an all customized, (not off frame which has 116,509 miles on it and on the customization a mere 2,100 miles!). Fully documented and meticulous track of mileage for various installs, particularly the drive train. The interior has some snazzy upgrades as well, and this is a fine example of the American "Ute".
Just like new for all the panels were stripped, any rust (which was light) was remediated, then it was completely straightened and sprayed with Sherwin Williams 2-part epoxy primer, and flat sanded. On top of the primer is a two tone Cranberry Metallic and over the bottom quarter is Cream Metallic. A stainless-steel trimming is on the delineation of the cranberry and creme and runs around the wheel wells. A bottom stainless rocker trimming is on as well. On either side is a 4 ice flip flop painted band with pin striping. This is in a tasteful gold and runs rod the three sides at the bed lip. The 1966 Chevelle flag and bowtie insignias have been hard painted on too. The bed has been today reworked and painted vermillion. A tan tonneau covering is snapped aprons the bed, and in front with the flying butters B pillars on either side of the rear glass. Also, a chromed airbrushed spare tire cover and spare tire within resides under the tonneau at the back of the bed. On the very back a custom license plate holder has been embedded into the tailgate, and the bumper below has bowtie badged horizontal bar taillights and backup lights within this shiny bumper. On all 4 corners are rally sport rims with chrome beauty rings, all wrapped in raised knockout white letter tires.
Tan and brown vinyl covers the door panels of these long doors which provide easy access to the interior. Speaking of which are dark brown vinyl buckets courtesy of a Citation. In the center we note a center console from a 1967 Camaro that houses a B&M shifter and switches for custom lighting, a custom built overhead console has reading lights, a clock, more electrical switches and 2 mini speakers. Speaking of stereo, this one has a boxed 300 watt amp that feeds 2 6x10 and 2 4x8 speakers. A new CD radio belts out the stations and CD's. The dash is a dark brown to compliment the seats and it has some wood appliqu panels for the instruments and above the glovebox. On the brown leather wrapped steering wheel is an aftermarket tachometer. Tan carpeting floods the floors and remains clean as does the tan fuzzy broad cloth headliner that has slight sag marks.
Under the hood is a 350 V8. It has a 4-bolt main and HD timing chain and oil pump. There is an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor on top. In back is a rebuilt TH350 3-speed automatic transmission with a Gold shift kit. The rear axle is a 10-bolt 3.42 version. There is dual exhaust snaking from this mill and they both have a muffler deletes. Miles on the engine 4,000, miles on the transmission 3,250, miles on the rear 1,100.
With the frame and undercarriage scraped and steamed to clean it, then receiving a fresh undercoating layer it now looks rust free and fab. All new shocks with the rear being air shocks. Power disc brakes are upfront, and power drums on back.
A quick starter and smooth runner. It handles nicely and stops swiftly. All functions were working save for the AC which all parts come with the car it's just not installed.
A nicely done and upgraded car/truck which is looking just great on the exterior, and with the upgrades on the interior more functional than back in 1981. Smooth runner and throw stuff in the back as well!
