DESCRIPTION

1992 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet Wolfsburg Edition

Several VW models take their names from winds, a pattern that\'s more of a historical accident than a planned strategy, and many think that trend continued with Golf. But \"Golf\" isn\'t a type of wind it\'s the German word for the Gulf Stream ocean current. It also happened to be the name of a key manager\'s horse, which appears to be the real inspiration.

To both commemorate the prior success - the reference to Wolfsburg, the site of the main VW factory since the 1930s - and some added blingification - new colors, special combinations, etc. There was no \"set\" thing that made a given car a Wolfsburg Edition - it was whatever the factory decided to do to boost sales. For consignment, a 1992 version of the Wolfsburg edition of the VW Golf. This car presents nicely but does have some areas of wear and tear, but hey its 31 years old and it\'s a convertible.

Exterior
Sticking to the square and rectangle design ... hey it\'s the 90\'s, we see Inca Blue Metallic bathing steel panels with well minded gaps in this econobox car. The paint is good but there are some dents and dings and repairs in the lower wheel wells, the edges of the wheel wells and the bumpers have scratches. A black front grille houses a single headlight on either side and a slightly smaller fog light nearer to the VW badged center. A body matching bumper is below. As we move back, the front quarters frame 14-inch alloy wheels that have some curbing and repairs painted over to peel off of the finish and corrosion. This is present on all wheels. A wide door with a blackened handle cozies up to the rear quarter and when the blue canvas top with a white tonneau is down a black roll bar is revealed at this junction between the door and quarter. A simple vertical rear to the car has wrap-around horizontal rectangular tail lights and another blue bumper below. A snappy looker with a body design by Karmann.

Interior
So this year\'s edition of the Wolfsburg decided to use actual leather on the interior, (at least it looks like it, as one never knows for sure...). Door panels are white with black uppers and lowers as well as an inset actuator, armrest, and mirror joystick as well as some lower storage. Seats are low back buckets with high rising headrests and are also white leather. These seats are showing some wear, cracks and seat center/edge soiling. A rear 2 plus 2 bench is installed and this is in the similar condition as the front seats. Between the buckets is black carpeting and the hump as well as a small white console near the dash. This console has the shifter and a trio of gauges staring at the driver. As we move upward there are the power window toggles, temp sliders and an AM/FM Cassette player. The dash has turned to black plastic inserts and this is where in front of the driver we see round gauges in square holes and a black padded dash top. The factory wheel is in and in black.

Drivetrain
Under the hood in a tight engine bay is a 1.8 L 4 popper which is electronically fuel injected. There is a 5 speed manual transmission on back and a 4.25 final drive to whisk you down the Autobahn. It\'s all tightly compacted in here but is looking fairly clean and mostly rust free.

Undercarriage
Sone blue undercoating which has road dirt and some oil blowback is near the spare tire cover. The remainder of the undercarriage has more rustproofing and mostly flat German aero panels. Suspension is independent Macpherson strut for the front, and a torsion beam and coil springs for the rear. Power discs in front and power drums in back and a new single exhaust system is noted.

Drive-Ability
A cool day but the top went down and I was off like a prom dress to the test track. Here it did nicely with smooth acceleration, shifting and handling. Braking was bias free and all but the AC was working.

A fun little second car or a nice car to have at your beach house, this little Wolfey is a hoot to drive and what the heck it\'s a convertible! Uh um Cabriolet..excuse me.
