DESCRIPTION

By 1962, it was obvious that the tailfin era was on the decline, peaking for most cars three years earlier. General Motors\' relatively new head stylist, Bill Mitchell, created creased, angular styling including rear fender skegs to mimic the tailfins above to kick off the model\'s second-generation in 1961.

This example was a one-owner car until 2007. It was sold at a that time and used sparingly and garage kept.

This Coupe de Ville started life in GM\'s Detroit factory during the second week of May 1962. It is finished in Olympic White (code 12) and the paint and trim are in overall very good order. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. This example as Soft-Ray glass, too, (code E) Overall a very sound car and underbody with some bubbling in the paint where the B-pillar meets the fenders. Overall a nice original car that shows some wear from 61 years of age.

This big coupe rolls on Ironman white stripe radials, size 225/75R15 at every corner. Each one is mounted on a steel wheel topped with a factory wheel cover. The wheel covers are in good, original order while the tires are in very good condition.

Under the big, counterbalanced hood is a 390 CID V-8 engine. Backing the motor is a Turbo Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission and a 2.94:1 differential. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning (code K) which is inop, power steering, power brakes, power windows and power front seats.

Inside, the car wears a Black Chelsea cloth and White leather interior (code 40). The front and rear bench seats with fold-down center armrests are in overall original order. The black carpet goes well with the upholstery while a white headliner keeps the greenhouse looking spacious. A two-spoke, black-and-white steering wheel faces the driver. Fuel gauge and odometer are inop. The inner door panels echo the upholstery but the driver\'s side could use some TLC. A column-mounted shift lever and a factory AM radio complete the interior.

A mild facelift characterized Cadillac styling trends for 1962. A flatter grille with a thicker horizontal center bar and more delicate cross-hatched insert appeared. Ribbed chrome trim panel, seen ahead of the front wheel housings in 1961, were now replaced with cornering lamps and front fender model and series identification badges were eliminated.

More massive front bumper end pieces appeared and housed rectangular parking lamps. At the rear, tail lamps were now housed in vertical nacelles designed with an angled peak at the center. A vertically ribbed rear beauty panel appeared on the deck lid latch panel. Cadillac script also appeared on the lower left side of the radiator grille.

The short-deck hardtop Town Sedan was moved from the De Ville series to the Series 6200, being replaced by a short-deck Park Avenue. In addition, all short deck Cadillac models went from being six-window sedans in 1961 to four-window sedans in 1962 and 1963.

Standard equipment included all of the previous year\'s equipment plus remote controlled outside rearview mirror, five tubeless black wall tires, heater and defroster and front cornering lamps. Cadillac refined the ride and quietness, with more insulation in the floor and behind the firewall. DeVille sales as a separate series exceeded their sales level as a trim level for the first time ever at 71,883 units, or nearly 45% of Cadillac\'s total sales.

Documentation includes a folder with original books, sales invoice and multiple receipts.

Coupe competition to this Cadillac in 1962 included Buick\'s Electra 225, Chrysler\'s 300, Dual-Ghia\'s L 6.4, Imperial\'s Crown, Mercury\'s Monterey and Oldsmobile\'s 98.

If you collect classic Cadillacs, enjoy big highway cruisers from the early 1960s, then this Coupe de Ville should be on your radar. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and check out this big, white Cadillac.
