1927 Ford Model T Track T
'Track Roadster.' That's what they called these 1940s-1950s racing machines. Their external appearance certainly was unique to say the least. But appearance aside, these machines were fast, sometimes faster than the hot rods of the period, the sprint cars. There was a great popularity of these hand-crafted race cars in certain parts of the country and the Ohio-Indiana area was certainly one that had great activity. Their speed was certainly illustrated by big-time driver Dick Frazier who set a world speed record and NASCAR also had a roadster division and two Indy 500 winners in Troy Ruttman and Jim Rathmann raced these cars early in their careers.
For consignment, a Track T if you will from 1927 and let's call it a modern version which was engineered, (see copious notes), to emulate the LA built Perre-Banta Roadsters of yore, (around 1952), and gracing tracks and taking lives mostly in mid America.
Made of durable and non-rusting fiberglass it is based on a 1927 Ford. Some key components were removed like the fenders and the car's wheelbase was lengthened and lowered for that sleek racer look. The engineering goal was to take parts which our builder began collecting in 1962, with the build commencing in 1981, and completed in 1984! All lines are horizontal and harmonious with the V shaped grille, V shaped front glass, aluminum cowled hood and passenger tub. Catalyzed urethane yellow enamel is all over this car and looking great. All aluminum parts were also sprayed with clear catalyzed urethane. The only extra on this race car are the King Bee headlights with dual bulbs. The cockpit edges were rolled and the rear wheel wells removed. There is a tonneau cover that snaps on and covers the entire tub. A rolled rear pan with teardrop shaped taillights and dual exhaust peeking out the bottom rear. The Halibrand magnesium wheels are finished on their backs and in windows with Dow 21 iridescent gold. Their faces were simply polished and above Michelin 145x15 front tires with inner tubes, and BFG 255x15 rear tires. Boyd Coddington eat your heart out!
Gray leather all in first class condition with big tuck and roll inserts and smooth bolsters fill the interior of this racer. Leather is on the side door panels and toe kicks. An oval 32 coupe wood panel containing the Classic Instruments and some warning lights sits in the middle of the yellow dash. A Nardi steering wheel is fronting this screaming yellow dash. Square weave charcoal carpeting covers the floor pans and it has leather edging. Just fantastic on the looks and comfort end.
Shoehorned in under the aluminum cowled hood sits an all-aluminum 215 ci V8 courtesy a 62 Buick. It has custom aluminum rocker covers and a custom aluminum oil pan. Inside is a Huffaker camshaft. There is an aluminum "beaver tail" air cleaner covering a 390cfm 4-barrel carburetor, and a 4-speed manual T10 transmission on back. The rear axle is aluminum and is a Halibrand V8 quick change version. All is kept cool by a sprint car all aluminum radiator. Exhaling is done through custom headers and lake pipes.
A marvel of engineering shows up under neath. We are talkin' forged I beam front axle that's been dropped. Brakes are courtesy of a 48 Ford with Buick drums which are all aluminum. The belly pan is also aluminum as is the 15-gallon gas tank. The frame is made up of "deuce factory rails'' and is boxed. The chassis was totally put together on a stable and laser straight jig apparatus. The body on top has been channeled 1 inch to bring the body and chassis into correct proportion.
Just a beautiful driver and awesome cruiser. And it all looks good while doing it. Handles great and stops on a dime. I love this race car!
5 stars for this screaming yellow zonker, custom engineered and after 22 years of parts procurement and a 4 year build, we have a rolling work of racetrack art. Like none other.
