DESCRIPTION
1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS ZL1 Convertible Tribute
For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS ZL1 convertible tribute showing 289 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Because X-codes to indicate trim, appearance and engine were only issued at the Norwood Ohio plant, there\'s no way to verify this car being a true RS/SS 396 as it was built in Los Angeles. That doesn\'t, however, take away from its stunning, near flawless presentation and later model ZL-1 powerplant.
Exterior
Two stage Garnet Red paint is complemented by a black SS stripe that begins on the nose and streaks rearward over the doors, broken only by the 427 call outs on the fender. A SS emblem is also on the grille which is flanked by matching headlight covers in true RS fashion, and cowl hood extends over the vents where ZL-1 is expressed in white decals, all in excellent condition. The chrome bumpers and metalwork are also nice and additional black accenting is found on the tail light panel and the ornamental vents on the rear quarter panels. 14-inch Chevrolet SS wheels are on board here with 225/70/R14 tires mounted letters out and our black canvas top shows nicely with its plastic window clear. Overall, the paint and body are in fantastic shape. Imperfections include a gap issue with the trunk, a scuff there as well, a chip near a wheel opening, bubbles on front fender, some minor scratches, paint runs, and the paint on the hood, header panel and wiper cowl is a shade lighter than the rest of the car.
Interior
Simple plastic formed door cards welcome occupants of the car with typical features and Camaro plaques on each Medium Red door. Red vinyl bucket seats are in very good condition, and the back seats are equally as nice. A wood rimmed steering wheel fronts twin coves that house the speedometer on the left, tachometer on the right, and a square clock in the center. A band of woodgrain dresses the mid panel, home to various switches and the AM/FM radio and wood also plays a big part in dressing the ashtray and glove box to the right. The center console is the center of excitement, with white faced gauges is a quad pack ahead of the white knobbed shifter with shift diagram and it\'s all super clean. Red loop carpet covers the floor perfectly and the trunk is clean, presenting with flat black stamped steel and a spare tire.
Drivetrain
The clean parade continues to the engine bay where we find a circa 1997 and newer 427ci crate ZL1 V8, rated at 425 horsepower and wearing GMPP aluminum heads, and a 4-barrel carburetor over a Winters intake manifold. Behind it, a period correct Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission routing power to the 12 bolt rear axle. Power brakes and power steering is on board and the engine bay is clean and show ready!
Undercarriage
The underside is also clean as a whistle and other than some spots of surface rust, presents as if it just left the assembly plant in 1969. Here we have chambered dual exhaust through chambered mufflers exiting through chrome tips and the power brakes distributed as front disc and rear drum. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs out back and even the hardware securing these things is dirt free.
Drive-Ability
The big V8 comes to life and makes its presence known with a pleasing exhaust note that\'s worth walking around the car to hear! After observing the idle, we roll the car onto the test loop where it exhibits obvious power underfoot with good handling and tracking. And this clean interior is not a bad place to spend a few minutes, or longer if you can! Meanwhile, we find the tachometer, horn, radio and reverse lights not working but all other functions operate as they should, and it\'s onto the showroom floor for this garnet beauty. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
For the discerning collector, this Camaro presents in near flawless condition with a spectacular engine choice and interior that looks like it just jumped off a 1969 sales brochure. It\'s a safe bet to put your money down on red for this one!
