Discover one of the most unique collector vehicles ever produced: this beautifully restored 1962 Amphicar 770, a rare German-built amphibious automobile that drives on land and navigates the water. Finished in its highly desirable original color of Fjord Green, this exceptional Amphicar received a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration to show-quality standards and was featured in the May 7, 2007 edition of Automotive News.

Produced by the Amphicar Corporation in Germany from 1961 through 1968, only 3,878 Amphicars were built, making this an exceptionally distinctive addition to any classic car, vintage automobile, or amphibious vehicle collection. The Amphicar remains the only civilian amphibious passenger automobile to achieve mass production, offering an unforgettable combination of classic motoring and boating.

RARE 1962 AMPHICAR 770 – HISTORY AND PRODUCTION

The Amphicar 770 earned its name from its approximate top speeds of 70 MPH on land and 7 MPH on water. Powered by a rear-mounted British-built Triumph 1,147cc inline-four engine, this innovative convertible uses a specialized dual-mode transmission to operate its wheels and twin nylon water propellers. In the water, the front wheels serve as rudders for steering.

This example spent 17 years with its previous owner in Michigan before being acquired by MS CLASSIC CARS in July 2022. After being sold in November 2022, it remained in a private collection for nearly four years and accumulated only 32 miles before returning to MS CLASSIC CARS in August 2026. Documented MS CLASSIC CARS investments total $13,596.09 across 2022 and 2026, supported by invoices.

The vehicle comes with both an automobile title and a marine title, along with an impressive assortment of accessories, documentation, and spare parts.

EXTERIOR – DESIRABLE FJORD GREEN

The exterior presents beautifully, featuring a straight body, attractive panel fitment, and show-quality paint in the original Fjord Green finish. The paint was recently detailed to a brilliant shine and is complemented by a white vinyl convertible top replaced in 2024.

Restored or replaced exterior components include glass trim, rubber seals, lighting, chrome bumpers, emblems, moldings, door handles, and other trim. The doors close properly and the sealing levers engage for amphibious operation. The car rides on 13-inch painted steel wheels with Amphicar chrome hubcaps and whitewall Coker Classic tires installed by MS CLASSIC CARS in October 2022.

INTERIOR – CLASSIC TWO-TONE PRESENTATION

The cabin features striking white upholstery paired with Fjord Green accents, matching the exterior beautifully. Highlights include two rows of bench seating, white door panels and sun visors, a painted dashboard, Motometer instrumentation, a 90 MPH speedometer, fuel and temperature gauges, and a two-spoke steering wheel. The interior is in beautiful condition, with everything operational except the analog clock.

The front storage compartment is neatly presented and includes the fuel tank, spare tire, jack tools, and additional equipment.

TRIUMPH ENGINE AND DUAL-MODE TRANSMISSION

Power comes from the correct 1,147cc Triumph inline-four engine, originally rated at 43 horsepower and 61 lb-ft of torque. The engine has been rebuilt .030 over, runs excellent, and features correct-style components, including a Solex downdraft carburetor, air cleaner, copper-colored valve cover, and Lucas distributor. A new radiator was installed, and MS CLASSIC CARS serviced the engine and added a new clutch.

The four-speed-plus-reverse land transmission and separate water transmission, featuring forward and reverse operation, were completely rebuilt and function properly.

CLEAN UNDERCARRIAGE AND ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES

The undercarriage is clean and presentable, with the floor coated in Lexan for easier maintenance. MS CLASSIC CARS also addressed the steering, suspension, and braking components.

Included extras feature the convertible top boot cover and case, jack tools, three life jackets, a life ring, a rowing oar, dealership brochures, service manuals, extra parts, and the Automotive News magazine featuring this unique Amphicar.
