A magazine-advertisement headline for the 1969 Corvette trumpeted the car\'s unique status: \"With one exception, there is no such thing as a true American sports car.\"

The copy read: \"As soon as you slip into the cockpit, you know you\'re in a one-of-a-kind machine. Nudge the accelerator-an avid new 300-hp standard V8answers (up to 435-hp on tap for the ordering). Take a curve-wider new 15x8-in. wheels, couples with 4-wheel independent suspension, give you riveted-to-the-road stability. And you can have the full wind-in-the-face feel of a convertible whether you pick the one shown or the Sting Ray Coupe (with its unique removable roof panels and rear window). It figures Corvette is the only genuine sports car built in America. One like this is enough to discourage anybody else from even trying.\"

Offered here is a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible in refreshed red over black under a black soft top. The classic color combination and 4-speed manual transmission make this a classic Corvette design inspired by the Mako Shark styling exercise. The very well-maintained example shows 93,395 miles on its odometer, or fewer than 1,800 miles per-year on average since new.

The Monza Red-inspired (Code 974) exterior paint is a professional respray; its condition is excellent with even high gloss across all fiberglass body panels. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.) This shade dates to the first Corvette and it-or a derivative red-has been offered yearly since then. This \'Vette is equipped with a black fabric top in excellent condition free of rips or tears. Chrome bumpers fore and aft are in excellent condition with minimal patina; likewise, the chrome windshield trim (with slight patina from age), and silver-accented, shark-gill-inspired fender louvers. Side mirrors and door handles show little wear. The twin front eggcrate-style blacked-out lower grilles and chin spoiler are in original, excellent condition. Cabin glass, and lighting lenses-including on the pop-up headlights-are clear and undamaged. Factory badging-including crossed-flags emblems on the hood and rear deck, \"Stingray\" script on the front fenders, and C-o-r-v-e-t-t-e lettering on the rear-is all properly located and mounted. Round, original-style, chrome dual-exhaust tips are in place. Original, silver-painted, 15-inch steel wheels with chrome, \"Chevrolet Motor Division\" center caps and chrome trim rings are mounted with raised-white-letter Cooper Cobra Radial GT 215/70/R15 tires.

The car\'s interior has been well-maintained. Black vinyl upholstery on the contoured bucket seats is free of excessive wear. Formed black door panels include crank handles for the roll-up windows, rotating lock mechanism, and chrome door-release handles. The factory 3-spoke, brushed-metal-trimmed steering wheel with crossed-flags emblem frames the large, 160-mph speedometer and 5,300-rpm-redline tachometer. Engine-monitoring gauges occupy the center stack above the original AM-FM push-button radio and fiber-optic-line-indicator color \"lamps.\" The black center console hosts the shift lever for the Hurst 4-speed manual transmission lever, an engine data plate, and handbrake lever ahead of an added center armrest. Storage pockets face the passenger. (To best assess the quality of the paint and trim finishes, please be sure to view the close-up photographs of the car in the accompanying gallery.)

Under the front-hinged hood, the stock 350-cubic-inch big-block Chevy V8 is the commanding center of a clean, but not overly detailed engine bay. No performance modifications are indicated; the engine still wears its original orange engine-block paint. A chrome cover adds flair to the air cleaner and chrome valve covers are in place as well. Viewed from below, the car\'s chassis is clean, complete, and undamaged. In particular, there is no compression damage to any component in the full-length, heat-wrapped, dual-exhaust system (as would likely be the case if the car had been subjected to overly aggressive driving styles or track use). To best evaluate the condition of undercarriage surfaces, please review the gallery photos shot from below.
