1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Pace Car Convertible
For consignment, a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Pace Car convertible with a title verified 70,847 actual miles. This car will include a detailed Rocket Report that details this particular car, one of the rare pace cars built by Oldsmobile, still with a numbers matching drivetrain.
Exterior
Porcelain White was originally applied in the Lansing, Michigan plant, here presenting two stage modernity, and notably lacking the door text but including the bold red lined black stripes that begin at the hood intake scoops and conclude at the base of the decklid, the matching body stripe that contours to the wheels openings. White painted wheels were also part of the package and are correct 14-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels with 225/70R14\'s. The white canvas roof is in very good shape and the rear glass window is, of course, clear. Two part tail lights are embedded in the chrome bumper above a pair of flared exhaust tips. Overall paint, trim, and those 442 emblems are in great shape. Imperfections include a touched up chip on the nose, a scuff on the arm of a side mirror, various cracks, scratches, and inclusions, all fairly minor.
Interior
The Supreme features simulated burl wood inserts on the black vinyl door panels along with some standard GM levers, cranks, and lock buttons, and both doors are in nice shape. The bucket seats are with decorative buttons on the uppers with panels of black grain vinyl with some wear on the driver\'s seat and some on the piping of the passenger seat. With the exception of a tear to the cushion, the back bench presents nicely. The four spokes on the wheels form an X and front more burlwood on the dashboard, surrounding three simple gauges including a tach over a mid panel with switchgear and an AM radio, burlwood and 442 emblem included! Black loop carpet covers the floor cleanly and the trunk houses a fitted mat and spare tire.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is an understated and stock appearing and a possible numbers matching 455ci V8, (see the Rocket Report), although we have some reservations about the stamping. The correct Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor is on board as is the numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 12 bolt rear axle and 3.23 gears. The car has power brakes, power steering, and air conditioning.
Undercarriage
Some minor signs of use and age exist with some light surface rust and a bit of residual oil but overall clean. Dual exhaust runs through stock style mufflers on their way to trumpeted exhaust tips. Power disc brakes lead the charge while power drums follow. Suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
The big 455 comes to life without hesitation and motors us around the test loop in fine, vintage style. It\'s hard to believe this special car was a daily driver for someone at some point in time! Meanwhile, plenty of power underfoot, straight tracking, and solid braking. The only thing that got a demerit was the clock not working. All other functions do as they\'re intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The 442 is legendary and the pace car is desirable. Together, you have a rare and desirable classic that immediately puts you into an elite muscle car class. These are stunning cars and one of the orphan brand\'s most coveted models. We know it\'s on your wish list and now it\'s time to check that box! Be one of 268!
