1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Hardtop
For consignment, a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7 hardtop showing 97,081 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This Nevada native was totally rebuilt between 2010 and 2012 with about 1,000 miles since built according to our consignor. Part of the rebuild was the custom dual exhaust which many mall employees took note of when the car rumbled through the receiving area.
Exterior
A stunner and a runner in two stage Medium Blue Metallic paint, enhanced with a white pinstripe on the beltline, wheel opening trim, polished window trim, and accenting hash marks on the rocker panel. That accent picks up on front and rear fascia that match with headlight covers that are a continuation of the ribbed grille, and a tail light band that only stops to make room for the license plate. Chrome bumpers hug the ends, an XR-7 emblem rides the C-pillar, and a subtle, sculpted head of Mercury, God of Speed, is on the nose. 15-inch Rocket wheels carry staggered size tires affording the car a subtle rake. Overall the paint, metalwork and trim are in nice shape. Imperfections include gap issues on front fender, uneven spots of paint, touched up chips, scratching in the clear, paint runs, and lots of underpaint scuffs and evident filler under paint.
Interior
Nice black vinyl door panels feature a Cougar embossed map pocket on each and some burlwood trim on the door pull and both doors present cleanly. Low back vinyl bucket seats are also nice and the rear seats feature a more defined grain vinyl. Woodgrain appears on the steering wheel and on the expanse of the dashboard, framing gauges that include a full sized tachometer, as well as a custom switch panel, and the oil pressure gauge which ends up on the navigator\'s side. A center console holds an AM/FM radio and sporty clock as a wood top plate covers the center console and frames the shifter over black loop carpet. Up top, our headliner is a bit loose but fully intact, and it\'s overshadowed by the very cool Lincoln-Mercury overhead console with red indicator lights. The trunk is lined with a plaid mat and the metal underneath shows one patch repair.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean, rebuilt 302ci V8 with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor over an Offenhauser intake. Blue valve covers dress up the powerplant which is mated to a rebuilt Toploader 4-speed manual transmission which routes power to the Ford 9\" in back. She\'s equipped with power steering and power brakes.
Undercarriage
Whistle clean underneath and the blue driveshaft is a nice touch! The source of the symphony is a custom dual exhaust system with FlowMaster mufflers and ending at chrome tips past the bumper. Power disc brakes are up front with power drums in back while suspension consists of coil springs up front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
This 60\'s version of a luxury pony car comes to life with a head turning rumble as we roll it onto the test loop to check functionality. There\'s good power underfoot and shifts are crisp and the view over the hood scoop is reassuring. We note that the horn, radio, and clock are not working and the reverse lights flicker when engaged. Beyond that, this blue cat does its thing and does it well and is ready for show and go. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Of the 150,000 or so Cougars produced in 1967, only about 27,000 of them were XR-7 hardtops and to our taste, we don\'t see enough of them at the mall! On the other hand, that makes them somewhat rare and with their unique styling, certainly desirable. This is a nice example with lots of work put into it to make it show worthy and road capable.
