DESCRIPTION
1965 Plymouth Sport Fury 2 Door Hardtop
For consignment, a 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury 2 door hardtop showing 25,887 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title exemption. This is a two owner car in original condition, no modifications, and a set of fresh tires ready to go!
NOTE: This vehicle is titled as a 1965 model year, however, the VIN denotes the car as a 1966 model year.
Exterior
Our consignor believes this is the original single stage Dark Green Metallic and we tend to agree as the Fury makes a noteworthy impression with a front leaning fascia that is an intricate assembly of lines, shapes, and bezels surrounding stacked round headlights, the position of which cause a slight raise in the top fender that is split by the hood gap. That means the hood itself is particularly wide and is capped by PLYMOUTH lettering on the nose and an ornament to crown it all. In profile, the triangular shape of the C-pillar is distinct as it reduces in size where it meets the body and creates a sharp angle to the back windows. Meanwhile, a bold body trim piece runs the length of the car, almost like a stripe and is accented by red, white, and blue stripes on the front quarter panel, something Furys would have in some form for years and often in different places on the car. The rear fascia consists of a stainless panel between what were basic tail lights in 1965, but muscular in their simplicity in 2026. 14-inch wheels with covers wear 215/75R14 tires with an early 2025 date code. Imperfections include drop staining and mottled dull spots throughout, touched up chips, dented trim, chips, scratches, rock spray, rust spots on the bumper.
Interior
Of all the American cars of this era, there\'s something just a bit extra about Plymouths and as it happens, the Sport Fury was the top trim level. Citron Gold door panels are tidy and well designed and both, while fully intact, show some age. Ribbed low back buckets seats are also somewhat intricate and the rear seats include a contoured area around Plymouth\'s red, white, and blue denotation and all seats, present in good shape with age to some. A full horn ring resides on the steering wheel on a chrome column that leads to a stunning dashboard highlighted by a large square speedometer. Move over, Tesla, this is a big display! It\'s flanked by a series of well positioned gauges, switches, and knobs, a clock, and an AM radio, along with chrome rimmed vents throughout. An AM radio lives in the center inline with the woodgrain covered center console with robust chrome shifter. Gold twist carpet covers the floor and along with the headliner, is in excellent condition. A period type plaid mat serves as the trunk liner in this clean and voluminous cargo hold.
Drivetrain
There\'s lots of room in this clean engine bay which makes the 318ci V8 appear small. It has a 2-barrel carburetor and is rated at 230 horsepower. Behind it, an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 8 rear with 2.94 gears. The bay presents in driver quality condition but plenty of elbow room when it comes time to clean.
Undercarriage
Typical patina underneath with surface rust, some residual oil and build up at the knuckles, but otherwise clean and solid. The single exhaust travels through a newer looking stock style muffler on its way to a rear exit and drum brakes are on all four wheels. Suspension consists of torsion bars in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
This time capsule takes us back to \'65 and does so with a proper running engine and some fine style inside and out. Straight tracking coupled with near limitless visibility through the post-less cabin make for pleasurable drive. All functions worked as they should with the exception of the radio and clock. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It\'s no coincidence that in the \'65 sales brochure, they refer to the cigarette lighter in this car as the \'cigar lighter\' as this represents mid size luxury for the era, reserved to the well to do. This survivor is a rare find; all original and a straight body with an overall clean interior. It won\'t be here long.
